MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Issue

Motor seems to be fuel deprived. Found a partially clogged filter and thought that was it. But motor still shutting down. Now realize problem with fuel pump. It runs then stops but does not fill as needed. Today I could continue to turn key on, let pump run to stopping, the turn key off and back on and get some more fuel in system. Sometimes have to go through this process 3 or 4 times. Any idea what problem may be and can it be repaired?

Gary, a likely cause is Point adjustment or points corroded. If corroded a bit of emery cloth will clean them right up. Fold the emery cloth 1/2 over so the contact surfaces of both point sets are touching the abrasive. squeeze the points together and pull the cloth through. Do this a couple of times and the points Wi I’ll be corrosion free and still parallel with good contact alignment.

I agree with Tom, it is most probably the points, however using emery to clean them would be too agressive. You should try running a strip of cardboard between the points. The other thing which would cause this is the diaphragm if your pump is old then the diaphragm may have been hardened by the ethanol in modern fuel.

From the MG TD owners manual:
Every 500 miles use a note paper ( paper money) to clean the points, if not worn / corroded.
Also I added a Bi polar TVS diode to mine.
In the 20 years or so, of using E 10 fuel,I have not heard of or seen a diaphragm issue.

There are 4 filters, if you disconnect the hose from the front carb, direct it into a glass jar, turn on the ignition.

Looking for a strong pulsing stream of fuel, no bubbles.

Running it for 30 seconds should deliver about 1/2 pint of fuel.

Usual precautions apply, cold engine, helper to operate the ignition switch.

This test should tell you if the problem exists in the pump, tank filter or pump filter.

Correct, in which case you can check 2 at a time for the aft most filters.

Irrespective, a simple check, verifies pump operation and filter “clogging”.

If you have 2 pumps and both are bad do not buy PowerBall tickets, you are short on luck.

Well, maybe I broke the rules but on the four cars I own with SU pumps, I recently cleaned the points in the pump by removing the outer section and cleaning it and then the inner section by GENTLY sanding/polishing it with a cutting disk on a Dremel tool. They all seem to be working fine since.

I got ready to follow advice and found that I have a mystery pump. No name, just says in, out, 12V, minus sign on power connection. When taking it off I found the power was looped through a hole on the little connection (1st pic top). This connection was loose with a horrible cold solder joint. I bench tested with a battery and it ran fine for 15 minutes. I believe the power supply was the problem.
The unit is sealed other than the opening that has a filter. This is the supply side. Does anyone know this pump? Came with car and I have no history. Thanks for everyone's input.

It doesn't look at all like an SU fuel pump. Perhaps an earlier version of the one in this photo given the way the end cap fits and the location of the in and out ports. This one is made by Facet.
