MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel pump mounting
I have noticed from the workshop manual that the fuel pump should have a rubber pad either side of the mounting plate. My car does not have these. Are they necessary? Matt |

The pads help cut down on vibration. The pads are not something I would bother to order by themselves, but the next time you place an order add them to what you need. They are an easy install, and can only help. Tom |

Thanks Tom, I thought that was probably the case. Matt |

The main purpose of the pads is to keep the noise of the pump from being transmitted into the passenger compartment of the. The mounting plate of the pump has over sized holes for the mounting bolts, while the holes in the pads are the proper size for the 1/4" BSF mounting bolts. When the pads are used, the bolts are centered in the larger holes of the mounting plate so that the bolts don't touch the plate and transmit noise into the passenger compartment. Cheers - Dave |

Brilliant and definitive answer from the expert. But where would we be without the reassuring ticking of our DuBois rebuilt SU fuel pumps (the TD/C, of course, has 2)? Just as hearing my heartbeat every morning reassures me I have not died during the night, the steady noise from my fuel pump makes me confident that I can keep on truckin'. Tom |

Tom - Even with the rubber pads isolating the clicking of the pump, one can still hear the pump ticking under the bonnet before the engine is started. Cheers - Dave |

I have some thick sheet rubber, so I'll try making up my own pads. Matt |

Dave - I know, I was being silly. Pardons. I once drove a TB over 400 miles with a failing fuel pump where no amount of points cleaning made any difference. I ended up tying a string to the pump and when it stopped clicking I simply yanked the string, which encouraged the pump to fire up again for a few minutes, at least. Tom |
