MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Pump Question
When I rebuilt my 1954 TF (1250) a few years ago I installed a back-up Facet pump. The Facet is at the right rear wheel well and the SU is mounted on the firewall. Dave DuBois rebuilt the SU pump a few years ago. I recently installed a clear glass filter between the fuel tank and the Facet pump. I checked the pumps by pumping some fuel into a bottle. I noticed that the Facet pump was pumping a steady stream of fuel while the SU pump was pulsating while pumping, i.e. not a steady stream.
Is this normal? Thanks much. Larry |

Yes, the SU is a pulse delivery pump. I believe others may chime in as to why it is a bad idea to have an in line filter upstream of an SU pump. Regards, Tom |

Having a filter before an SU pump is a problem if the filter clogs. The SU will contiue to struggle to suck and deliver fuel, and can burn itself up trying. Having a clogged filter downstream just means that the pump would stop itself when it felt the back pressure. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Tom-- I understand what you are saying about possibly burning up the SU pump. It makes perfect sense. What I think happened to me is that the filter on the backup Facet pump became clogged and this in turn burned out the SU pump just as you state. When I removed the filter on the Facet pump I could barely blow air through it. I replaced it with a new filter. I also installed a clear glass filter prior to the pump so I can easily see any debris in it. This was recommended by two fuel pump experts. The caveat, of course, is to make sure to check the filter once in a while. Each year when I get the car ready for the driving season I will add 'check filter' to my list of things to do.
Thanks much for your input. Larry |
