MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel pump trash

Helped a buddy get his TF running. My job: fuel system. This came out of his SU pump. I wasn't expecting to see a fly (at the top). He's got a fuel line filter now. Duh.

I had a lawn mower quit running once and started troubleshooting to find that it was not getting fuel. Further inspection resulted in finding a blocked fuel hose from the tank to the carb. I then used a bit of air to try and free it up. An earwig came shooting out the end. Aparently it had crawled in through the tank vent end either died in the fuel or crawled to his doom seeking a way out. Once free of critters the mower ran like a top!

S.U. carburettors are amazingly tolerant of swarf in the fuel. I've almost never seen one clogged by any debris because there are no small ports to be clogged, unlike a conventional carburettor. You simply need to open the throttle wide under a load and virtually all the crap gets sucked in and burned. The worst thing that can happen is that the intake screens in the tops of the fuel bowls can become clogged.

....well, the trash has to make it past the float valve. If that gets jammed open, say, with a fly carcass......

Yeah, but the fly carcass is gonna get caught in that top-of-bowl screen! ;)

I've found earwigs in fuel filters, gas lines and carbs before. I detest the little ba$tards. I remember them being much more plentiful 30 years ago.

Looks like the pump's filter did it's job, no?
Others here have warned not to install an inline filter because it can cause the pump damage. You might want to check the archives on this as I am no expert but I did remove my inline filter for that reason.

Ed, I have been told the same thing but have the Moss billet aluminum filter before it goes into the fuel pump, been there 8 years, so far no problem.

Ed, Perhaps the filter can damage the pump if the filter is so clogged that it causes a vacuum, but given the small amount of gas that passes through, a fresh filter almost dribbles that much via gravity causing no distress to the pump.

I've noticed that a from a full tank of gas to about 3/4 full, gravity will fill the barbs. The pump really doesn't do much work.

I did install a fuel pump in my hot rod that couldn't suck though the 'way-too-small' filter that came with it. Cheap NAPA POS. You could hear it cavating, poor thing.

Damned near stranded me 50 miles from home on our first rod run. Under the car on the side of the road I removed the filter and muckled it back together BRAIL. Hot rods are a bit low, no way to see anything.

At my age I don't put up with that kind of nonsense, life's too short. That pump hit the bin.

A high efficiency, sub micron filter between the tank and the pump can become clogged and if it does, it will cause the pump to stall in a current on condition. If the power is left on (such as when troubleshooting), the coil will overheat along with the internal swamping resistor - ultimately burning the swamping resistor out (see the article, SU Fuel Pumps Facts and Myths in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my Homepage at http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ ). When that happens, there is no longer any arc suppression and the points will burn prematurely. That is why I suggest not putting any additional filter between the tank and the fuel pump (there is already a filter screen in the tank on the outlet fitting and one on the inlet side of the fuel pump). How about newer solid state pumps, with no points?

"How about newer solid state pumps, with no points?"
Same thing. The stall is caused by the vacuum not allowing the diaphragm to return to it's relaxed position. With the all electronic pump, in addition to burning out the swamping resistor, it will destroy the circuit card. for the electronic triggering. Cheers - Dave
