MG TD TF 1500 - fuel tank vent?

Can anyone tell me where the vent should be on a TD tank. I can't see anything on the filler cap but there must be one somewhere.

John,

The vent is in the cap itself. If you have replaced the seal in the cap, expect to have a hard time keeping the engine running on a start. If the seal is too tight, a vacuum builds up which prevents the fuel from flowing.

Replacing the seal isn't always a good idea unless you have experienced serious sloshing on corners, etc. The old seal is often better.

If you want to get serious, a pigtail soldered into the cap is another solution, but is probably overkill.

Gordy, when I first bought my 54TF I experienced problems with a weak fuel pump that could not overcome what a previous owner did. They installed RTV, liquid rubber, around the inset in the tank that the cap fit into. After installation of a new pump the problem of fuel starvation was lessened, but not stopped, I took a closer look and noticed this seal problem. I cleaned this out and installed a proper cork seal in the filler neck. This eliminated that problem.
