MG TD TF 1500 - Garrish steering wheel
I would be interested to hear comments on the colour of this steering wheel. It looks very wrong to me! |
John James |
It may be caused by my colourblindnees, but I don't see any steering at all? |

OOps! Try this. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=27380&item=4555407990&rd=1 |

Looks like the same color as my wheel. Greg & Grimm |

Don't know about "wrong", but i don't think its "new"... maybe "refinished"? Has the look of epoxy filler? |

I am agree with Gordon, it is not new. There are 3 instead of 1 groove for a key. Ernst |

Wow!! A new wheel to look like old. I copied the the photos from the ad and enlarged them. The extra key ways were cut with a hack saw. It's definetly been painted and made to look old, it has so much detail that the paint looks like it has chipped paint under it. They even made the spokes look old by dulling them and adding some extra crud at the spoke ends of the hub and outside ring. |

I think Gordon is spot on. The rim of the wheel that came with my car was cracked where the spokes fitted - exactly where the (epoxy?) bumps are on the photos. I managed to get a perfect wheel from a friend who had lots of Morris Minor parts. "Our" type of wheel was only fitted to the early split screen Minors. Happy bidding! Jan T |

IMHO, Looks like hub & wheel have been re-painted with "Moss Bronze" to me. I re-did the center cap on mine (and dash insert) with this paint and looks fine there...but I don't think the hub or ring should be this coloure? Pretty sure my wheel is orginial and it is more of a "tan" coloure "in" the plastic ...not "painted"! Sterring wheels on TD & TF the same? Cheers, David 55 TF1500 #7427 |

Definitely looks filled and painted to me. The rim should be a light tan plastic with some marbling. No way this wheel is "New". |

As I said earlier,if you copy and enlarge the photos you will see it was poorly preped and painted. The only thing new about the wheel is the ad that it is in. |

OK Chaps, it's definately a wheel to steer clear of! |
John James |
John, I wasn't going to go there... I was able to RACK my brain AND come up with a different way to express my oPINION. |

Oh, no. We can't seem to get a thread without a pun in it. John |

I solved my wheel problem (don't have a proper steering wheel) by deciding to keep the Moto-Lita three spoke slotted wheel that came on my car (pre 1979). I'm going to refinish the hub to match my exterior color (the black was chipping of the plastic hub) and I've repainted the rear hub (the satin finish shows off the crinkle finish real well) and I'm in the process of adding one more coat of spar varnish to the wood total of four, any more and I'll have way too much thickness compared to the aluminum). http://www.funpilot15.photosite.com/MGTDRebuild/motolita/ Thinking about my rack, and realizing that when I took it apart, my pinion is no longer oriented correctly (probably) I took a look at the three keys and thought "Wow, that's how they did it" and am glad to hear that MG steering wheels aren't tripled keyed. I will adjust my wheel on the car, and try to figure it out in advance by looking at the angles of my column, and the permutations available in the system. I've 00 and 0000 steel wool the aluminum, and rinsed it well with water, so I can avoid the corrosive effects of steel on the aluminum. Should I clear coat enamal the aluminum, or let it age gracefully? That krylon sure runs, and I'm concerned about the long term look. Votes are welcome! dave |

OK I brought my wheel in the house and compared it to the computer screen and there is no comparison that is NOT the same color as my original wheel. When I looked at the item yesterday from the forum I thought o yeah that's the same color NOT. My original does have some marbling in the plastic. Greg & Grimm |

That was wheely funny Craig! Remind me to "steer" clear of that auction. I have SPOKEn. (well, there are spokes in it!) |
