MG TD TF 1500 - Gear and axel oil

I am looking to change the gear and axel oil in my TF. Do I use the same oil and how much?
TRH Hammond

Searching through the old posts here, I found this from Lonnie Cook and it appears as though Laverne may have approved:

Some members recommend:
GEARBOX: Redline MT-90 (GL4) - #50304.
DIFFERENTIAL: Sta-Lube API/GL-4 Multi-Purpose Gear Oil SAE 85W90 for hypoid gears from NAPA.
ENGINE: I use Valvoline VR-1 20W50.

I am laying in supplies and already have the differential oil in the new Dave Clark rear end.

Before the spring I intend to change engine and gearbox oils and add the new Tom Lange magnetic drain plugs.

Question here, are those recommendations still valid, planning on having Amazon bring them to my door unless I get a better offer.

Todd, use GL-4 gear oil, not the more readily available GL-5. Use the same in your steering rack.

Thanks to all.

I was very impressed with the improvement in my shifting when I changed to the redline 90.
Bruce Cunha

Found the Redline MT-90 made my transmission shift easier, I also use LaVernes suggestions on the rest of the oils. PJ

Redline for the gearbox use the whole quart! Yes the recommended amount is 24 oz BUT it shifts better when overfilled!
Synthetic GL5 for the axle, yes I know GL5 can damage the bronze pinion or spider gear washers but it is recommended in the axle. Not the gearbox.
Len Fanelli

Len,
check with the oil blender about GL5 in the gearbox as this yellow metals damage stuff is often said about the Ford Type 9 gearbox I have fitted in my 1973 midget and is not correct (out of date web/pub wisdom) things changed many years back.

I don't know about original TD-TF boxes perhaps they have different types of yellow metal - and then of course it's a matter of whether you believe what the blender tells you but years ago the web/pub wisdom was synthetics oils would ruin classic engines, gearboxes and rear axles (and rot your teeth and steal your looks, I've still got my teeth and good looks - and modesty).
Nigel Atkins

Once you've used Redline MT90, you'll never go back. Made my tired gearbox come alive.
