MG TD TF 1500 - Gear knob

My gear stick knob is of wood, and looks very original. However, it can be rotated endlessly, and does not fasten or unscrew.
Any comments? I would like it to sit tight.

Raymond, the thread on the knob should be 8x1 mm.

You need an insert in the knob, and a lock nut underneath.

Mine is wood, and not original,,, it has a set screw down towards the base which tightenes up against the shaft,,,,It is very small and might have been overlooked?

Mine is from Moss and is threaded. It requires 2 nuts, one to set it so the "MG" logo is in a nice position then a 2nd one underneath the first one to lock the first one in place. It still loosens up over time. Maybe a lock nut between the two would help?

Some aftermarket knobs aren't threaded or even have a set screw. They may have just had a hard rubber insert that is supposed to stay in place on the shaft via friction. They may stay on the shaft, but will spin annoyingly easily. This can be exacerbated by someone trying to unscrew it over and over and prematurely wearing the rubber insert.

ed, if your gear knob has a threaded insert you don't need what amounts to a third nut. just set your gear shift knob in the position you want and tighten the lock nut up to it. there is not one place on any aircraft that uses 3 nuts to hold a fixture. or another analogy..like wearing suspenders with your belt. Damm, I didn't need the belt. Heh, Heh

I agree with Dave Littlefield. I bought a knob that has a rubber insert and just slips onto the gear shift. It stays in position so I don't mess with it. Been there a year or so with no problems.

I make wood gear shift knobs, the on my car is made of african blackwood, the same stuff they make oboes and woodwind inst. out of . I use our club pin on the top to face it off.
