MG TD TF 1500 - GEAR REDUCTION STARTER MOTOR - Any problems?
I plan to install a gear reduction starter. All the reasons make good sense for me. My research shows that that are several makes, which begs the the question " which is the best for my TF?" Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

I fitted one and am very satisfied with it. I did this because of previous experience with a TR3 that really struggled to turn over on the original starter, especially after minimal use over winter. Mine was easy to fit and came from British Starters, same starter as for a later midget I believe. They come with a starter solenoid built-in, which you can use or not. Dave H |

I had to repair one for a friend, sorry I cannot remember the make. The flange had the same size bolt holes as the original but the reduction gear box was held to the body with much smaller ones. I know the original long body screws were small in diameter but the body had locating balls so the screws took only clamping loads and not torque loads. I must admit it is the only failure I have heard of but good to check often. Ray TF 2884 |

I have one on my fast road XPAG. I bought from British Parts Northwest across the pond. Do remember the manufacturer but the motor itself was a Denso with the adaptor. The first one failed a year and a half later. The motor to adaptor bolts had backed out. They replaced it no questions asked. No issues with the replacement the five years. Spins the XPAG even when hot, much lighter than the Lucas unit and no removing the exhaust getting in or out in a TD. Their price may be better even with shipping to the UK. May want to compare pricing unless your also looking for convenience of replacement should something go amiss.

Aren't British Parts Northwest in OR? Peter |

Do they all work with either - or + ground? Tom Lange MGT Repair |

I would think so Tom, it is a motor, geared to provide more speed I believe. Unlike a horn which would suck instead of blowing if polarity is reversed. :-) |

Yes OR. I misread were Gordon was located Another one of those brain farts. |

I have one from BRITISH STARTERS on the race car. Only issues in 20 years was a broken wire internally at the solenoid, easily fixed, and had the long bolts loosen once. No damage, just loctited and tightened. Spins a 12:1 compression motor over just fine. Frank |
