MG TD TF 1500 - Generator/Starter Repair

Can anyone recommend someone to repair/refurbish my generator and starter. I would like to keep my own and not exchange. Thanks, Bill

Holcombe Armature in Vila Rica used to do this . I would check with them as I have used them in the past.

Bill,
You can use a starter for an MG midget,, A lot less expensive,, no core charge, and it looks the same,,, available from your local auto parts store

Mr. Holcombe passed away some years ago. The business with the same name, if still exists only does modern car stuff. Maybe someone in the Atlanta area/clubs can comment. A company called Star Electric in California only does Lucas stuff, no first hand knowledge. George

Check your local area for an auto electric shop. Any if then can overhaul both starter and generator. Cheers - Dave

A shop that repairs electric motors will sometimes repair starters, generators and alternators, especially if the shop has been around for some time. They can also get parts that are usually NA to the general public. PJ

I used Star Electric to repair my generator and was very satisfied with their service.

Bill, I would recommend that you send it to one of well known companies that specialize on Lucas generators and starters. Worth the cost IMO.

Took mine to a local company that has been doing this work since 1975 and advertised they restore vintage tractor generators. All of the older staff is now gone (and they won't tell you this) and the new people don't have a clue. Screwed it up with non-standard parts.

Spoke with Star and they certainly know Lucas generators based on their comments and immediate knowledge of part numbers and generator markings. Might also speak with Jerry Felper (British Auto Electric) and see if he does generators and starters or can recommend someone. He rebuilt/adjusted my voltage regulator and had it back in less than 1 week.

Good luck.

Not sure of shipping costs, but Boyles future technology (https://boyle-future-technology-ca-1.hub.biz/), can do it.

Despite the name, Mr. Boyles has been rebuilding starters and generators for a very long time. I have taken a starter from a 1925 fire truck to him and had it back totally rebuild in just a few days.

He has done my MG TD starter and generator and the starter in my 67 GT.

Ended up sending them to Star Auto Electric in California. Thanks for the input.
