MG TD TF 1500 - Girling front shock absorber
The Girling front shock absorbers on my 1950 TD require new oil seals. I have tried to renew the drivers side (rhd)seal on the end which is not splined however it is still leaking. No doubt the seals would have been Imperial sizing however I cannot seem to obtain them I believe the correct size should bve 1.125" OD. X 0.6875" ID X 0.250" However there is room for a much thicker seal. I opted to replace them with the best I was able to source in metric, the closest being 29mm OD X 17mm ID X 5mm thick. The archives show information on rear shock absorber seal replacement however I cannot find anything on the front shock absorber seals, or any sizing. It appears the seals in the fronts differ from the rear. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. John...Sydney |

John, For the front Girling seals I use two lip seals on each side 19x30x6mm and 17x30x6mm. Note there are different seals on each side. You need to press the whole shaft out and you don't have to remove the arm on the RHS of the photo. The rears are different and I use 17x29x5mm. Always check the fitting and they may need a whiff taken off on the lathe For the rear dampers you will need a core plug and according to my notes I have noted 29mm but followed by a question mark. This needs to be checked. The principle is the same for the TD. Here's a link to an article I wrote on how we repair Morris Minor dampers. The principle is the same for the TD. http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=36349&hilit=how+to+repair+a+damper Regards Declan |

Thank you Declan Burns,Duncan M,old M Guy,Peter C and Paul J for you suggestions and help. I will try the easier option first by using some suitable packing and compressing it into the housing by the use of washers all being squeezed in by the damper arm as suggested by Peter C. If this fails then I will have to move onto the next step as suggested by Declan. John...Sydney |
