MG TD TF 1500 - Girling rear shock filler cap
Can anyone tell me the correct size spanner or socket to undo the filler cap on a Girling rear shock? Thanks Cliff |

Cliff - I believe that the spanner used for that filler cap is a Stillson adjustable spanner. I wound up using a large pipe wrench to get the cap off. Due to the very fine threads for that cap and a deteriorated seal, plus some rust makes it a real challenge to get off. Hopefully some others with ideas or methods will add their methods. I had the shocks off and hauled one down to Northern Tool and looked for an adjustable spanner that opened wide enough for the job. Not a pipe wrench - I didn't want to scar the flats with the teeth from a pipe wrench. BobbyG |

If your shocks aren't smooth or resistant, have them rebuilt. If you want to open them up just to see, don't; the liklihood of getting dirt in them is great. If your shocks don't work right and equally, and/or are low on shock fluid they need rebuilding, not re-filling. Do as Tom Maine above suggests - Peter Caldwell, Worldwide Imports, Madison, WI. Lifetime guarantee, and excellent quality. No other option, as far as I am concerned. This is one thing I leave to the experts like Peter, Jeff Schlemmer (distributors) and Joe Curto (carbs). Cliff, I just checked on my car, SAE 1 7/8" fits a little loose. Having said that, let me add that I ignored the advice of the sages on this BBS to my eventual regret. I attempted to replace the leaking seals around the shaft. Finding a seal that fit was difficult. That was compounded many times over by the fact that the pivot shaft is not concentric with the body of the damper. Without doing some machining on the body, I don't know how you would ever get them to seal. I doubt that they sealed very well from the factory. I might be tempted to pull the cap off to replenish the oil at some point in the future, but if you have to do that then it must be leaking and should be repaired anyway. Although I have not used him yet, if I were to do this again I would take the advice so frequently given here. "Don't clean them, don't take the cap off, don't fuss with them! Box them up, and ship them to Peter Caldwell." Respectfully, Kirk |
