MG TD TF 1500 - Girling shock absorber
I am after the length and diamater for the rear girling shock absorber link, have only been able to locate armstrong ones and thought I might be able to cut one down |

Bob, I'm preparing to replace my Girling rear shocks with Armstrongs which I've had for some years. This, of course,if I'm able to find the Armstrong links. When I next visit the restorer where my 1950 TD is in many pieces, I'll measure the Girling links and forward the data. Maybe we can work out an exchange, e.g., Armstrongs for Girlings (new bushings probably will be required). Lovely Brisbane where I used to jump off for Port Moresby. |

Bob, I'm not sure how I goofed but it is showing laf48@aol.com as the originator. laf48@aol.com was my link to this BBS on an earlier question I had posted. Reply on the Girling links to Ambass3@aol.com, George Payne, Arizona. |

Hello. Both links are about 17cm on center. The Girling link has a rubber bushed eye in one end (fits onto the pin on the spring plate), and a 90 degee bend on the top which pressed into the rubber bushed eye on the shock arm. It is not possible ( in my experience) to get an unmodified Girling link to stay into the shock ( you have to drill a hole, use washer/cotter pin, etc.) My fix involves keeping the Girling shock, and using the Armstrong link- I did this many years ago. You press the pin out of the rubber (the round end) of the Armstrong link, cut a slice off of it, and press the pin back in (hence, the pin-or bolt- sticks out farther- then press this into the Girling bushing, install washer and nut (either self-lock or with two thin locked against each other). This may offend purists, but in my case was done when there were no bushings available to repair Girling links. You may also check with Apple Hydralics and Abingdon Spares as they use to have all kinds of links. Good luck! |
