MG TD TF 1500 - Glovebox door and modified dash- we have pictures!

Okay, I said to myself, if the whole dash is nowhere near stock, do I care if the glovebox doorknob is octagonal?

Nope - but at least it's black.

Now, about the "Magnette" crest - it's the big one off the mid-50's Magnette and then ground down to size and powdercoated black. It seemed like a good idea at the time, since the whole idea is to create a "D Magnette" - the hotrod that MG could have built if time and circumstances had been different. So the crest looks out of place, but we'll inlay it properly and if it doesn't look any better in May, then we'll build a new glovebox door.

The four gauges have the toggles below them, and the ignition key is just barely visible on the outboard side of the steering wheel.

So - lots of wires hooked up, lots still to go - still have to feed the oil temp line through the firewall. But we're on track for ignition on Wednesday afternoon.

Let there be light! Low-beam, hi-beam, and driving lights all work. Fuses didn't blow, either. At least not yet.

Dave,

Every time I see a progress shot of your 'D' Magnette, I am pleased to know I had a little part in it (arranged to get his hardtoip from Paul Gaynor in Connecticut to him via Stowe, Rockburn, Montreal and Edmonton).

With temps in your area in the -50° range, I don't imagine you'll be out and about with it. When IS the planned big day?

Interesting steering wheel... did you modify the original? Haven't seen a hub like that on an older one?

Gord:

With Wednesday's projected daytime high of -16ºC, I think it'll be warm enough for takeoff from a warm garage, a two-block spin down the street, then a safe return to the shop. Let's call it a high speed taxi test followed by one circuit to confirm safe operation of landing gear.

So at 1600 [Zulu -7] on Wednesday you might see some fireworks on a sat display coming from the northern prairie a few hundred kliks east of the Northern Rockies. When you see that, you'll know that 27991 has risen again.

After we drive around the block, we'll pour some Glenfyddch on each wheel as a wish for fair winds and safe seas, then we'll get a start on the hard top, the soft top, the side curtains, and the tonneau. Though we might pour a little Glenfyddch into some coffee cups first.

And the steering wheel - it's not C Jag, nor is it John Deere D - though both guesses are close, I'm told. The original MG crest fits right in, though the hub had to be machined. Let's just say that the steering wheel is more agricultural than automotive in nature, and that Wednesday afternoon's romp at 60 kliks may be the fastest the steering wheel has ever travelled under its own power.

Who would have thought that five years ago we'd end up here. it's always the small steps that make the difference, isn't it.

Best - and thanks for your help,
Dave
