MG TD TF 1500 - Grommets: correct sizes; sources

Someone earlier this year went to the great trouble to gather the CORRECT information about all the grommets that we use on our TDs (and Moss gets so wrong) but the thread did not come up by an alphabetical list under "grommets" so, I have to ask that good person to point me to the right one. Thanks.

John - I don't know what the name of the thread was for the information you are looking for, but I do have a copy of a similiar article that appeared in the mgTalk from the Southeastern MG t Register. If you will e-mail me, I'll send you a copy. Cheers - Dave

Dave,

Please copy me as well.

Thanks,

I.is there a way that we can work with the web authors to set up a technical area for information such as this? I know this group has an unbeleavable amount of resources, but it would be nice to have a place to go to look for this. The archive search engine is not the easiest to use.

My favorites folder on MG information is full of a lot of web sites with misc. information such as this.

Firewall Rubber Grommets

Submitted by: Bill Baker

This article applies specifically to my TF 1250 chassis # 911, body # 9519; however, I’m sure it is significantly applicable to all T series cars.
From mgTalk, Nov. 2004, The Southeastern MG T Register
by Bill Baker SEMGTR #305

I’m doing a ground up on my car, and when I received the Firewall Grommet Set from Moss I was somewhat disappointed. Not only was it incomplete (not providing for all items passing through the firewall), but in addition the grommets provided did not provide a snug fit around the cable or wires that were passing through them.

I have owned this car for 37 years and have hauled it or stored it as needed as my career took me across the country and out. And during that time, I always had dreams of restoring it during retirement. And since I’m now doing it, I might as well do it “right “ the first and last time.

I’m providing a list of grommets with sources and part numbers, which I have discovered. I’m sure there are many other sources that are just as good; but I thought I could save somebody some time in this effort.

Use MOSS grommets for both wire loom holes.

On another rubber related issue. The new Moss front suspension Link Seals #281-388, fell apart even before I took the chassis off the jack stands (about six months). Turns out Moss has finally resolved this issue. Seems as though previous seals issued were made of a material to high in pure rubber content. These were stamped with an embossed number; Moss will replace these seals with new ones not having an embossed number on them. Maybe this will solve the problem?Having embossed numbers is not the issue, it’s just a way of identifying the difference.

Dear Dave,

Oh! THAT'S where I saw it (Vol 30, # 11). Bill Baker did well by us all. HOWEVER, it does not solve the problem I hoped it would and that is where the headlight/marker light wire bundle passes through my fender wall.
The same article deals with the problem of the Moss link seals deteriorating very quickly (mentioned in my front suspension thread) and that is the ones that have an embossed number on the rubber are "wrong". Moss will replace.

Don upstaged me (which is appropriate in that he is the editor of that really great newsletter), so nobody needs to wait for me to send them the article.

John - Regarding the grommet for the headlight/side markers through the fender, a couple of suggestions. Check with Abingdon Spares for the grommet and get the catalogs from Victoria British <http://www.victoriabritish.com/> for the MGA and MGB. As I recall, they list the grommets by their actual size. Finally, measure the size of the hole in the fender and the OD of the wire bundle and check at a local electronics supplier (try MCM <http://www.mcmelectronics.com> or Newark <http://www.newark.com/> NOT Radio Shack) for a grommet of those dimensions. Good luck - Dave

Don,

You are great! - I mentioned in another recent thread that my front suspension seals had perished even though the car hadn't been on the road - no one took up the thread but subscribers note.

I measured the grommets I needed individually and initially bought them from Maplin but eventually found AES - www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk had a really excellent range. I bought quite a few solid ones and cut the centre hole to suit the cable. Best way is to make a punch out of a piece of pipe - just sharpen the edge with a file and give it a good thump with a hammer on a hard wood anvil. If you don't have a piece of pipe of the correct diameter you can use something smaller and nibble away round the circumfrence. If you need to split a grommet cut it with a craft knife blade, clean it with acetone to remove the shine, place it over the the wires and join with super glue - use Locktight brand - the stuff made in China is useless
