MG TD TF 1500 - Gunson Colourtune

It looks like the gunson Colourtune is something I should have in my T-Kit.

Can anyone tell me where I can find one - new or used?

Moss Motors has them in their catalog. Check with your favorite distributor. E-bay has them periodically.
Opinions vary as to their usefulness. I find that the range of adjustment on the car is broader than the color change I can perceive. I always get finer tuning with the factory method, after balancing with an air flow synchronizer.

Dallis, sorry to be so dumb but
whats a "air flow synchronizer"?
how do they work and where to find them

The Colortune is an excellent method for people that don't have the "feel" for getting the mixture correct. I took mine out to Lake Tahoe for Openroads 2002 and it came in very handy as the altitude affected a bunch of Healey's. Made several friends with that thing. I do like adjusting with the color and it helps also in watching for misfire problems since it has a window into the combustion chamber while it is running. Not recommended as a sparkplug alternative. I bought my first one with a large window in the late 70's in the UK. They have smaller windows now.

Gary, he is speaking of the Unisyn meter. It is for synchronizing the air flow for multiple carb motors. There are a couple of types available. I have two of them. I'm not one to describe the complexity of how it works so I will describe what to look for. The Unisyn is an aluminum bodied component that has a round face that is held over the throat of a carb. It has a visible tube mounted on the side with a couple of markers and a red plastic "cap" inside that slides up or down inside the tube when vaccumn is pulled thru the face of the unit. There is an adjustable wheel in it's center for adjusting the amount of vac pulled. The other unit that I use is my favorite as it is just a unit that is placed over the throat of the carb and has numbers marked off on its face and a needle that slides across the face to measure vac being pulled.

Gary, both types of air flow balancing meters are available also through Moss Motors (I have no affiliation), and other distributors. Either of these are good, and recommended for anyone tuning their own carbs. Of course there are those that do it with a rubber hose to the ear. I no longer hear that well.

Gordon, as they say, "you've got mail".

I was just using the unisyn and colortune on my friend's MGB last evening. I use the colortune to come close, and then drive and fine tune from there. The unisyn is much easier than the 'rubber tube to the ear' method I used to use. The colortune seems imprecise, but part of that is just the infrequency with which I use it.
