MG TD TF 1500 - hard to start when seting over night

Car is hard to start after setting for a period of time. fuel pump operates a few "clicks", engine won't fire. If I tap on both float/bowls the fuel pump operates as if filling the bowls, then the engine fires and runs fine.

Took the top off the bowls and checked the lever and pin for binding. Looked OK. Floats don't seem to be leaking. Could the spring assembly need replacing?

Any thoughts would be appericated.

Tom - The problem you are describing sounds like the float bowl are emptying while sitting. If this is happening overnight, then you have a leak somewhere that is draining the bowls, probably the jet seals. If on the other hand, this only happens after the car has been sitting for a long period of time without being run, then the fuel is just evaporating out of the float bowl and the float lever is hanging up against the needle valve due to excessive lever drop. This is not a spec on our cars, but in more modern cars, there is a float drop specification that precludes this type of problem. I will send you some information on how to adjust the "float lever drop" to preclude the problem (note, this is different from the standard float level adjustment in hte shop manual). In the mean time, if your float bowls are draining overnight, you will need to address that as a seperate problem. Cheers - Dave

David,

Thanks for the reply. Sitting over night is the problem. Don't seem to see a leak or smell gas. Bowls are about 1/2 full when I inspect them. Again, if I tap on the bowls the fuel pump takes off.

Tom - As I said in my e-mail, it sounds more like stuck needle valves at this point.

Bob - I'll send the info to youshortly. Cheers - Dave
