MG TD TF 1500 - head lamp brackets
Could somebody inform me please about the headlamp brackets( thru radiator shell) are they chromed or painted body colour. Thanks for your time, Gerard |

I have seen them both ways. My (early) 52' were painted. The finish on them was such that chroming was not possible. My car originally came with painted buckets. Earlier cars (and some later ones) had chromed buckets. I believe, but have no proof, that the earlier cars, pre 1952, with the chrome buckets, had the brackets chromed. What year is your TD? Jim my TD is 1953 cheers Gerard |

My 51 had original chrome/King of the Road headlight but the brackets were same color as the rest of the car which we found was originally black. I do not believe that the brackets were ever chromed from the factory. I could be wrong however |

My '53 TD is BRG (but no telling what the original color was. I have pictures of it in 1974 and it was BRG then) and the brackets are black. The buckets are chrome but again, they may not be original. Jud |

I've looked at three original cars recently, one with painted headlights, two with chrome. All three had painted brackets. I think that one way to look at a car is to see the aggregate of what is not original, and then decide how likely it is that the one thing you are considering, is original. For instance, I think it unlikely that an owner would chrome ONLY the headlight brackets, so a car with other non-original chrome must be suspect. Another car I recently had in the shop had chromed brackets, but it also had a chrome valve cover, chrome band around the generator, and a chromed battery hold-down. It seems reasonable that all these are after-the-fact gussying-up. My vote is for painted brackets. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Gerard, I've got a pair of painted brackets that I won't use any more. I'm in Edmonton now, but I'll be in Penticton starting August 1st. If you want them, I can get them your way then. |

Gerard, The small brackets which go through the radiator surround are chrome plated. I think it is also correct for the large bolts, nuts and washers that connect these brackets to the headlight support brackets to be chrome plated. The headlight support brackets are painted body colour. |

The small headlamp bracket to radiator brackets on my car were chrome, as were another painted over original pair I have. Chris Couper's "original TD site" says chrome, black, or body colored. Perhaps all three correct due to supplier variations? The early Moss catalogs always noted that the big nut/bolt were not originally chromed. George |

Thanks Guy's for your sharing your collective wisdom. Gerard |

Some headlamp bracket bolts may have been chromed but most were hand painted body color. If you have chrome brackets you can consider chrome bolts, otherwise stick to body color. The nuts seem to always have been either natural (Cad) or painted body color. |
