MG TD TF 1500 - Headlamp Support Bracket Stud Holes
Would someone that has an original car please look at the headlamp support bracket and tell me if the threaded holes for the two studs which go through the fender are drilled through the arm, or if they are bottom tapped only. This detail in photos is too small for me to tell. I am restoring a TD, which was re-painted once years ago. Apparently the studs were rusty as they were replaced with bolts. The brackets now have tapped holes all the way through the ends, which may be correct, or it may have been done when the PO removed the rusty studs? I have the opportunity to correct this now if needed. Thanks for any input. |

Hello In my car (1952TD #13402) one hole has a thread all the way through the bracket, and at the other side is a fixed bolt in the bracket that should fit a nut from under the fender. So one nut, one bolt. Hope my english is understandable safety fast Erik |

Dallas, it looks as if they are through holes, tapped all the way. The top of the holes appear to be filled with something and are then painted over. This is based upon viewing two cars. On each car one bracket has both holes showing threads. |

Thanks Erik, Bud, and Tom for checking. I had noticed the open holes on some cars and it appeared to be an unfinished detail. I have also noticed rust creeping up the threads on some. I am replacing the studs anyway, so filling the holes will be easy. |

Just checked mine from underneath (they are chrome and have no holes/threads when looking from above). There are two studs with nuts/washers holding them in place from below the fender. |

The manual says : Section R5 Front wing removal remove the nuts nuts, bolts and spring washers attaching the headlamp tie-rod bracket to the radiator case, "(and the nuts, locknuts and flat washers securing the head-lamp tie-rod bracket to the wing.)" Use studs 5/16 BSF so they stop when done up in the tie rod bracket, then clean top and fill to paint. |

Guys, they are tapped all the way through and the studs are fitted into the holes. If you are painting these brackets, drive the studs all the way up almost flushed with the top of the bracket and use a little body filler to smooth out the hole in on the top of the brackets. When finished and painted there should not be any indications of a hole under your paint. If chroming the brackets fill them instead with solder sand them smooth and take them to the chromer. The end result should be the same, no indications of any holes under the chrome. This way there should not be any rust or anything else creeping anywhere since there is no holes or dimple of any kind on the top of the bracket. Good luck. Mac |
