MG TD TF 1500 - Headlight dimmer switch mount

The mount for the headlight dimmer switch on the TF has three screws securing it to the body. Are these screws the same as the ones that secure the rear splash apron? The ones on my car are a Phillips head, is that correct? PJ
Paul sr

The phillips head screws do not appear to be correct.

The dimmer is secured to a metal "L" shaped bracket by two hex head sheet metal screws and washers.

The bracket is bolted to what appears to be a stud and uses a hex heat nut which cannot be seen

Without removing the the whole unit it is very hard to determine the nut sizes. Sorry 'bout that.

Difficult to get a shot, but imagine the bracket being rotated Rt. about 35 deg. to vertical

Really a dumb place the switch and hard to find with your foot.

Colin, The one I'm referring to is on a TF. The face of it looks like your photo, but it has a 90 degree bend on the left side, triangular in shape and is bolted to the side of the cowling with three bolts/screws. They look to have the exact same head as the rear two splash apron screws. The heads are hidden with the engine side panels. PJ

Phillips head on mine Paul...right or wrong I couldn't tell you. I believe they are smaller diameter than the rear panel screws.

L E D LaVerne

I believe that he is looking for the bolts that hold the bracket to the bulkhead and not the two that hold the switch to the bracket. Mine is held on to the bulkhead by three bolts with 1/4W heads and two Phillips head screws hold the switch to the bracket.

Well Paul, My pictures are from our TF 6688.
Its very difficult to photo the bracket as my heater is in the way. This was the best shot I came up with.
The triangular rear of the bracket is bolted to the steel side panel with hex head nuts, bolt heads are blind. It does have two 90 deg bends to position the switch.
As I showed you before the switch has hex bolts and they appear to thread into the switch base casting.

Anyone who has seen our car will testify to it originality and lack changes. This bracket show no sign of ever being removed.

Take it for what its worth.

Paul,

My '53 TD has three hex head bolts. I can snap a pic tonight if needed.

Thanks guys for all your input! My bolts/screws are exactly like LaVerne's on the outside and look like Chris's photo inside. So I'm assuming my bolts are original. I think their 3/16 W nuts. PJ
