MG TD TF 1500 - Headlights rewired through ignition switch?
Just a thought that I should share this re-wire job that I found on my ignition switch last week. It seems that the wires were reversed as compared to the wiring diagram in the manual. I changed them back to the diagram but now the headlights do not automatically shut off when the ignition key is turned to off. I have to manually turn the lights off, now. I somehow liked the ignition key turning off the lights as it would keep an idiot like me from leaving them on in the daytime and running the battery down. Anyone else done this and which is preferable? |

Dave, if the total headlight current was going through the key switch, you are lucky it didn't melt or burn. It could be made to work this way, but you would have to use a relay and engineer some new wiring. George |

Dave, I wired mine according to the wiring diagram in the shop manual and I must turn them off manually. |

Mine go off manually...believe that is the stock position! |

Dave - If you are worried about leaving hte lights on (I had that problem since we run with lights on all the time), you can do one of two things. 1) make up and install a headlight alarm that yells at you if the lights are left on (this is what I did and I can supply you with the diagram to make one). 2) wire the headlights through a relay controled by the ignition switch. Dave, A diagram for a lights-on warning would be great! DaveL |
