MG TD TF 1500 - heat insulation material
I am restoring my TF to original, but thinking of putting a heat foil material under carpets. Any one had good experience (or bad) with any of them? The Moss stuff ok? Keith in NJ |

Keith, You should most certainly use some sort of insulating medium under the carpets. I went to a local car trimmer and bought a couple of metres of a woollen felt material that they use for this. It was very cheap (around $10 per metre) and easy to cut with sharp scissors. I then used a contact glue from a spray can to stick it to the underside of the carpet pieces. Only secret to getting a snug fit is to cut the insulation about a centimetre smaller than the carpet all round, that way it never shows at the edges, and the carpet pieces fit together well. It works really well at keeping the engine heat away from the occupants! Regards, Bill, TF1500 #9901 |

I bought both the Moss cheap and more expensive stuff. I used the cheaper stuff on the less critical areas and the good stuff on firewall, etc. I think either one works fine and would probably stick with the cheaper one if starting over. It is not self-adhesive but a can of auto upholstery spray glue from NAPA worked fine. I would say having the insulation reduced interior noise by 30%. First drive I thought something was wrong with the car! See Dave Braun's web site for great pictures of how to do it! I followed his lead pretty much. Ed |

Keith, I used a rotary trimmer (visit a quilting shop) to trim my woolen felt, as cutting with a scissors seemed teadious to me. There is a whole section on carpeting in my website, in the interior section. I didn't cut the material as closely as Bill did. I also used a heat resistant felt with foil backing on the interior under the upholstry panels. warmly, dave |

I put the double side bubble foil under the floor boards sandwiched by the frame. |

Keith, I am about to do the interior on my Healey and the general opinion is that Dynamat Extreme is the best. Certainly not the cheapest and the best place to get it is on Ebay. Have a good day! John |

In the UK too much heat isn't often the problem! However, I use a 'space blanket' from the local camping shop. It's about 6ft square and folded over a couple of time fits neatly over the gearbox cover and under the carpets on either side. Being 'metal' backed it really keeps the heat away from the feet, and of course is easily removed. Mike. |

John Progress, Did my Healey at the end of restoration, sealed firewall, tunnel, and under carpets with the moss stuff, very effective and coolest Healey I have ever driven. About to do that to TD before this driving season, but it seems more like a sound thing in a T series, not heat. Maybe have put more miles on my Healey. Those twin bad boys below your ar*e produce tremndous heat, and beautiful noise. Bob

I used the packing type felt underpad material...also contact cemented it to the underside of the old carpet... Just a note that when you glue the transmission tunnel piece, it is best to do it 'in place'...you will end up with a form fitted tunnel piece instead of a thick hard to bend piece. |

Bob, looks like you need to make some in your shop. Better send me one of those Bugeyes to take care of for you LOL. I see you have the same Chinese bead blaster as I. Have the gloves fell apart yet?

Thanks to all who replied. It will make a difference as I restore the car. Keith |

LaVerne, What a lovely MG Stable! |

LaVerne, What is that black thing in your garage sans fenders and radiator? That's not your TF. Did you get a new project? Ed |

It's an old picture Ed. The black thing is really the BRG TF mid restoration. The red B is mine. The yellow midget belongs to a cousin was and is stationed in England USAF. His dad stores it for him and at the time I offered to get it road worthy as my cousin was coming home for a few weeks with his new to us British wife. Swapped out the single Zienith carb for a twin SU set up. Took the guts out of the cat coverter. Replaced all the suspension bushings and rebuilt the lower wishbones. A good general cleaning and wax job. They put several hundred miles on it when they were here. It's back in storage again at my uncles house. No new projects at this time but I do keep my eyes open for one. |

Bob, I see from your picture that your BJ8 Healey is a phase I car (square mirror). Mine is also a phase I car. Don't see too many of these around. I think mine is the only one in our club. Have a good day! John |
