MG TD TF 1500 - Hellings air cleaners
What is the consensus of the listers concerning the best type of foam to use in Hellings carburettors air filters? |

Are we talking about the originals or the replicas being produced? |

No production, just an old pair on a TD I am working on and which I found to have what looks like a long strip of Brillo pad type material wrapped tightly around the inner cylinder. This would effectively stop the carbs from ingesting air. I have no idea how the engine could actually run under these conditions, but it did, albeit not too well. I know that there should be some sort of foam acting as the filter material and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what is the best material. |

The brillo type material is what I remember... did one not oil it? Seem to remember it was recommended to clean them in petrol? |

G.E., If there anything like the reproductions that I bought then I think I'd look at trying to find a K&N that would fit it. Mine have some gray foam but look to be as restrictive as anything I've ever come across. If you want to use the foam I'd head to a motorcycle parts house and see what they have to offer. LaVerne |
