MG TD TF 1500 - HELP ! I've put my engine in back to front
My favourite book EVER is 'The Complete M.G. TD Restoration Manual'. I try to read a passage from it every night before I go to sleep. Last night I was browsing around page 58 and horrors I realised I had put my engine in the wrong way round ! The photograph on page 58 shows the exhaust going down the LHS and I was certain mine was on the right. I ran to the garage, still in my night clothes, and yes mine is wrong. So what have I done ? Should I have bolted the exhaust manifold to the tappet chest cover or should the engine be the other way round with the clutch fixed to the vee belt pulley ? I think the latter is correct - that's why the differential case bolts are on the right - this means I will have 4 forward gears and not 4 reverse. But there is another solution I know US spec cars have the steering wheel on the 'wrong side' is it possible when MG made TDs the US and UK cars were mirror images of each other ? Does this mean if I buy parts on ebay they may not fit my car ? Does anyone have a list of parts that are common to both specs? Cheers to all Jan T |
