MG TD TF 1500 - Help!!! Still no Brakes

I have done the bleeding process from day one starting from the furthest wheel cylinder, and as before have checked all fittings to make sure they are tight. I will say this, I did have some pitting in the master cylinder, but was able to bench bleed the master cylinder. Since my last posting, I did take the piston out again, cleaned everything. The only thing that bothers me is when I push the brake pedal in, the piston is very slow to get to the stop. I believe I am real close to buying a new master cylinder. Any suggestions before I put the money out for a new master cylinder? Thanks, Steve

Buy a new master cylinder. Your life and other lives depend on it. Have good solid working brakes, before anything else. They are not that expensive.

If there is pitting, it needs to be sleeved and rebuilt or tossed. Pitting will cause the seal to fail or leak, which has nothing to do with bleeding. You can send it to White Post Restorations and have it sleeved and rebuilt with a "lifetime" warranty for about the cost of a repro new cylinder. George

PS- If the cyl. is binding internally, there could be some incompatibility with the rebuild kit, as there are several kinds out there now. On the bench, you should be able to push the piston all the way down and it should freely return all by itself; likewise on the car the pedal should pop right back up. Any binding means something isn't right somewhere-either internal, or with the pedal assembly? As an aside, my White Post cylinder came back with a serious industrial-looking bellows that will actually keep gunk out, rather than the flimsy original thing, as well as a brass piston. Lastly, brakes are no place to mess around or save money. All of the advice here is certainly good, but sometimes you need a real mechanic, club member, or someone who has actually worked on brakes to evaluate, help out, or eyeball things. I almost drove my TD through my parent's garage wall once, but that is another story! George
