MG TD TF 1500 - Highly Detailed TD on eBay

There is a nice example of a 52 MG TD currently on eBay, with some great detail photos for some of us currently in the restoration process. I'm no expert on originality but this does seem to be a highly detailed example.

Any comments?

I would agree. It appears to be a very good restoration, near concorse perfect from the photos.

I only see two items that could be changed. The registration/body number plates I believe were originally nickle coated. I can't tell from the pictures, but the top bows appear to be body color and I believe they were more a sand/tan.

Anyway, way above the quality of mine.

Very nice restoration.

Most important shortcoming, and a safety issue, rear brake lines should not run inside rebound straps.

Also, choke and starter pulls should not have a "C" or an "S." They should be unmarked.

Tremendously nice car. Interesting for me as it's the way mine (should have) looked coming out of the factory, I wish mine was still this color combination.

Only thing I noted was it looks like the muffler took a rock and has a tear.

Really nice. I know my car was orignally ivory, but no telling what color the interior was before a PO put in the black one.

I always thought the oil sump should be left unpainted. Also, I think I would have replaced the overflow pipes on the float bowls with fresh ones, and run them straighter. (Isn't it funny what each of us zeros in on?)

Very nice car. The starter and choke knobs are MGA, not TD. I would appear that the attention to detail other then that was pretty fantastic. It even looks like he put the headlamp support pads on the fender the right way up. Most people put them on so the bracket sits "in" the dish. They really install what most of us would think is "upside down". I'm certain that there are people out there who will disagree on that point, but I've seen three unmolested, unrestored TD's here in the Santa Barbara area, and all three were like that. Yes, the ID plates were originally nickel plated.

I think someone else also noted that the top bows are painted the wrong color, and I also think the color on the canister for the oil filter is incorrect. But those are both tiny nits. Overall, it's a fine car. I'm not in the market, since I just finished my TF and am enjoying driving it.

Two things I circled in on are the tonneau slots for running with side screens up and tonneau on hood down. My LBCC tonneau does not have these. I can remember back in the '50's running with hood up and tonneau on no side screens. Also I don't remember that the tank support strap bolts were visible and I think Schach says to cover them up.

Okay, my turn -- the dashlamp/dimmer knob appears to have also come from the MGA parts pile. Greg, the tonneau cover with the rear curtain slots is indeed a very old design, perhaps OEM.

One other safety item.

I do not like having the gas line hanging down like they have it. Great potential for it to hand up on something or be hit by something.

I have a very old choke knob with a "C" in it.

Wow. Love the color combination. The quality of the restoration seems top-notch. I also noticed many of the "errors" for lack of a better word. I think it speaks volumes that we end up with these tiny issues when critiqueing the car!! All in all, in better shape than mine, and would love to have it (though not in the market). I hope this car gets the $$ it deserves.

Glad I don't have a concours quality TD for this group to go over. Wouldn't we make a tought group of judges.

On my 1952 TD which I bought in 1959 (unrestored) the ID plates are brass and were polished when I got them Also the top bows were a sort of metallic tan color originally. However that being said this is a really nice restoration and other than a few nit picking points I think it is done really well. My TD won a first place in Premier Voting at the New England MT T Registers meet in Newport RI in 1970 after I had restored it. I still have that car.

Interesting on the ID plates George. I have a couple that are late 53 that are plated and also the one from my 50 were nickle plated.

Thought that was how they all came.

Seems to me I have seen I.D. plates on original TD's with the back ground painted black and the lettering chrome/nickel plated. Also one of the bolts in the front a-arms/pans, looks to be inserted in the wrong direction. Otherwise it seems to be a rather straight forward , spot on restoration.

Hey Bruce one question How do you tell chrome plating from nickel plating?
Rodger T.

Can't comment on the eBay car as I am having trouble downloading the pictures.

Anyway it seems from the comments here that a review of the TD Finishes pages may be in order for a few of you here :-)
