Gordon, That car is great,,, I guess it shows that ya gotta search by more than just MGTD or MG-TD,,, that is a great find,,, SPW |

Forgetting for a moment that I'm a bit of a purist, that looks like a great car! I love that it's a 1937 flathead. That's actually appropriate, being what someone might have actually used as an engine conversion back in the 50's / 60's. |

About the same vintage engine as the XPAG, which was designed in (I believe) 1932. This was a relative common transplant back in the 50s. I can remember reading about one such car in Road and Track or Car & Driver back in the dark ages when I had a TD in high school. Cheers - Dave |

Dave You are off by about 6 years. The XPJM (Morris) version of the X-series engine came out in 1938 with the bored out XPAG (MG) version making its debut in 1939 in the TB. Aside from that it seems to be a nice installation of the V-8 60 and I find it interesting that it appears to retain the TD gearbox. It would be interesting to know what rear end they used as the MG set up would be severely under-geared for the Ford engine. My curiosity may be due to the fact that I have two V-8 60's leftover from my Dad's estate and have thought about re-creating a car with this conversion, which, like you, I remember reading about in the car magazines of the fifties. My Dad also did the same conversion to a TD in 1958. His affection for the V-8 60 going back to his midget racing days in the late '40's. Mike |

Gentlemen, Once before I asked the Board if anyone remembered a Studebaker rear axel being used with engine conversions back in the 50s and 60s. I once saw a Ford 60 flathead in a TD but did not get an opportunity to look under the car. At the time such info was all work-of-mouth so the accuracy and details of the conversion (if in fact it was being done) never reached me. Safety Faster and Faster! Jim Haskins 1953 MG TD |

I think it's awful and I would not accept it for nothing. Denis |

The flathead V8-60 was probably the earliest conversion of a TD for added oomph. One must keep in mind that the US overhead valve V8's were still on the drawing boards back in the early 50's. |

Mike - I stand corrected. Cheers - Dave |

I often wonder with TD's history of weak rear half shaft's how the TD'S hold up with a monster V8 stuffed in there . One slip of the foot off the clutch and PING thats all she wrote . |

My first car was a 1932 model A ford. I had that exact engine in it and was running the original model A rear end. No problems. There is one real pain with this engine. The distributer sticks out the front of the block. Getting to the points or setting the timing is a real pain. While I would not change an MG to this setup today, it is a pretty clean fit in the TD. Hope the purchaser reads this site and posts pictures on what he does with it. |
