MG TD TF 1500 - how stupid can one get
Hi all After bilding up curage for some weeksi will tellthis. after sevicing my td two times a year for ten years, spring and atumn, checking engine oil, water, brakefluid, rear axle oil, plugs, top af pistons thru plugholes distributer, timing, contacts. could not get the engine to startor run correctly. after a glas of(water) the hard disk started to work. a-ha the distributer of course works anti clock wise. it must be the age( not the cars) the car being 58 I being 72. You can call me names. I will not be offended. Thoralf.Norway MG TD 4490 Mosquito The wooden wonder. |

Thoralph. Do not feel bad. It is just the vapors from the wood glue that got to you. Sandy |

Thoralph, Want to feel good again? Read some of my post!!!! Thanks Sandy, Now I have several things to use as an excuse! Glue / Fuel / Starting fluid fumes. Wife will still insist "it's that cooler full of OSH" at Abingdon Hootersville North! LOL Cheers, David 55 TF1500 #7427 |

Clockwise - anti clockwise, we all get dyslectic from time to time. It's never the age though. Like wine, we all get better as we age. Cheers - Dave |

Thoralf, I did that two days ago on a friend's car. It doesn't run too well on 1243 rather than 1342... of course it means that you just have to swap 2 and 3, but the clockwise / counter-clockwise thing can be hard to spot because you are so darn sure you did it right! warmly, dave |

I learned early...never pull all the plug wires off at the same time....one off, pull the plug, clean, reinstall...pull 2nd, etc etc. |

Gentlemen, Years ago I had frozen gas cap key lock on the pickup truck. I was walking from the garage back to the truck with the propane torch all set to light it up and heat up the lock in the centre of the gas cap, when the HORROR of what I was about to do hit me in the chest. It was several minutes before I could again catch my breath, and got some pliers, heated up the key, and then inserted it into the gas cap lock to thaw it out. Sometimes the stupid factor grabs you ....... and you get very lucky indeed. Gene |

It transcends the sexes also...wife all set to "look" for source of the "smell" near the gas meter with a bic lighter. Clockwise - anti clockwise I can wrap my brain around,,,but "unscrew in an upward motion" (clockwise) confuses me to this day! I have not taken the radiator cap off a hot Buick to check fluid level for quite a while...kind of like that "zipper" thing we guys learned at a "tender" age..somethings you don't forget! Hehe. My other car is an automatic. My wife hates driving with me as I am always hitting the brake forgetting I am not driving the MG. |

To All. Thank you for your kind words. I have discoverd the reason forthe virus on my harddisk ( my head) It must be what Sandy Sanders suggested, the vapors from the wood glue and cyancrolat (super glue) and epoxy I use when building my other Mosquito ( model aircraft) It's too hot up here now. 30 deg C. Thoralf, We all do this stuff. The day that I got my TD back from the painter, I was so excited that I backed it into my kid's basketball pole (cost me a new bumper). A few years ago after spending a month redoing the engine compartment on my MGA, I was excited to take it for a ride around the block. But forgot to put the dipstick back in. (what a mess). I'm still not sure if I put water or brake fluid in my Dad's 1972 Ford LTD, but he did have the master cylinder fail in the Winter.... And I'm sad to admit, but I'm trained as an engineer and a physicist; so I know how to be careful. : ) Ira |

Thoralf, Just tonight I did something equally stupid. I spent today adjusting the valves, setting the timing, checking float levels, spark plugs, etc, etc - routine maintenence. We had a club meeting tonight, and I had just finished the car and it was idling in the driveway as I closed the door to my garage. I then noticed a huge, and I mean huge, puddle of oil on the driveway and I immediatly shut down the engine; rolled the car into the garage, and went to the meeting in my van. When I got back. I checked the oil and found that I had inadvertantly put in 3 litres too much and now I have probably blown one of the seals! I'm ashamed to tell anybody how I made this very dumb mistake! dumb ... DUMB ... D-U-M-B !!! Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Gord You may be lucky and find that it blew the dipstick out. My old Volvo used to do that. Ira |
