MG TD TF 1500 - How to attach TF front splash apron
Hi Guys Finally have everything completed on my rad and I have been looking at this front splash apron for quite a while now wondering what is the correct way to attach it. I have the attachment for the grill to the chrome surround to contend with. This must be some sort of flat bolt as it doesn't go through the apron but instead buts up to it. There are 2 very large holes on the apron. Should these have some sort of insert in them. Finally I think I am right in saying there should also be a piece of piping between the chrome and the apron. Picture attached. Any help very much appreciated. Thanks Darryl |

Just looked back over corespondance and Mathew had put me right in that there should be no piping between the bottom of the radiator and the front splash apron. Obviously at some point it was included on my car. |

The four outer holes are hex bolts. The two inner holes are Phillips screws that attach to the captive nuts in the bottom plate. These two have thin rubber washers under the metal washers to protect the apron on my car. The piping runs along the guard/side panel, then does an outward turn at the apron. Terminates at the ends of the apron. Also two smaller side pieces between the side panels and the chrome surround, above the guard piping. Matthew. |

The 1/4" BSF setscrews which go into the captive nuts (often missing) located on the panel between the radiator and bottom of the chromed radiator shell are indeed Phillips Head as well as being domed. You may find the rubber pieces through which these screws go are rubber grommets. Tom,good to see you attending to this Front Splash Apron panel. This panel ties the Front Wings(Guards) together to give a rather rigid form to the wing to side engine panels and chassis extensions. On cars where the Apron has been left off, cracking often will occur around the headlight Nacelle ! Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis").TF9177("Athos"). |

Thanks guys I have this picture which helps somewhat. But unfortunately I have no captive nuts although I do have plenty of the clips that self tappers screw into which I could use. These are all over the rad used for attaching different parts. |

The final question I have is the bolt used to attach the slats at the bottom. This needs to be flush to allow the apron to fit nicely. Any ideas on this. Pic attached. There are lots of other holes in the picture which I guess are spare. |

D Lamb, The pair of rubber grommets (in the larger holes) tend to tilt the Splash Panel very slightly downward which enables a shallow countersunk screw head to just miss scraping the paint off the panel's top surface. Any other suggestions? Cheers Rob Grantham |

Thanks Rob that makes sense. Now to get some rubber grommets and a load of countersunk screws. The ones I used to attach the chrome were all dome shaped and I am sure they should also be countersunk. |

Darryl, Many automotive spare stores will have the grommets. You may need to just punch a hole through the middle through which the 1/4" set screw can enter. Be warned about the correct countersink angle for the screws used on the TF radiator shell. The originals 'sit down' in the countersink of the chrome radiator shell a fair deal better compared to the 'modern replacements'. I think I got a supply of the right ones from an Aircraft Builders store at a light plane airport using airport transfers tunbridge wells. I have seen gleaming new paint chaffed off the underside of the bonnet halves when the incorrect countersunk screws are used on the top area where the bonnet rests on the radiator shell support plinth !! Thanks Rob....lots of great advice. I definately need to change the screws before they do any damage. Hopefully they won't be too hard to get. |
