MG TD TF 1500 - How to fold top (hood) - TF?
> How do you fold the top in your TF? Tips? Suggestions? I finally bought clips to mount my hand crank to the rear panel. Before I mounted the crank, I folded the top so that the rear window was vertical near the rear pannel. But now, the window may scrap against the clips. (Hand crank is mounted differently in TF vs TD.) So I followed the instructions in the Operation Manual to pull the window tight and horizontal. But that reduces storage space over the side curtain box. If I store larger items that are shorter than the surface of the tonneau but taller than the window, then they may scratch the window. Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 "Folding the Hood" - TF Operation Manual: |

i DON'T THINK YOU WANT ALL OF THAT EXTRA MATERIAL HANGING OUT OF THE SIDES,,,THE TONNEAU WILL NOT FIT RIGHT,, STEVE |

That's why I made my canvas completely removable. Looks like cr@p when up (a rare event) but looks great when not up. Jud

And with the tonneau. Lots of storage space behind the seat. Canvas in the redwood box. Jud

I am surprised your window is making contact with the crank. Is this because it has luggage pressing against it? You may need to figure out a way of hanging a towel over the crank, something like that. I don't think the operation manual says to pull the window tight and horizontal, that just refers to the top panel from the windscreen back to the two roof screws. The manual says to pull the rear panel of the hood forward (the window panel) and the fig1 illustration shows the drivers left hand pulling the panel forward. I had a problem with the window chafing against itself because it is doubled over, but solved that by putting a soft cloth within the bow of the window. I have seen other owners place a cotton bed sheet over the whole hood and folding the hood with the bed sheet in place to protect from chafing against the bows at the sides which seems to work. Thanks Matthew you have given me the solution to protecting the window on my top. Graeme |

Tip : I always put a towel inside the fold of the window to stop the contact / rubbing between clear vinyl on the inside at least. Cheers. Dave |

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. However, I still believe that the Operation Manual shows and describes the "rear panel" with the window pulled forward and held tight horizontally. A portion of the top is trapped between the hoodsticks and the body. >> Anyone know how the top was originally folded? Interesting - the TD manual has the same description and illustration. The TD hand crank is mounted on the back of the seat, so the horizontal position of the rear window is not necessary to avoid touching the hand crank and clips. By the way, I will probably fold it so that the window is vertical near the hand crank. And protect the window with a cloth as Matthew suggested. The flaps of fabric will be tucked inside behind the hoodsticks. Lonnie TF7211 |

I always use a small towel (thank you Hampton Inns)to protect the plastic window when the top is folded on both my MGB and my TF. |

I keep my hoods (tops), with frames, hanging in my attic most of the time. I just very rarely use them. I fabricated a pair of clips for my mgb top that enable me to literally kneel in the car and lift the top straight up on my shoulders, to carry it upstairs. The U-shaped clips are bolted to the top frame and slide down into the sockets on either side of the car, making the removal or installation of top and frame a one minute operation. The mga top hasn't been on the car since I removed it when bought the car. The TF has no top. Cheers, Frank TF 1891 |
