MG TD TF 1500 - How to seal head gasket
mgtf. Rebuilt engine. Put in new head gasket. Leaks (oozes) a bit of water. Took it apart. Rechecked torque and it was right. Thinking of installing new head gasket, this time with Indian head gasket shellac compound. Any other suggestions? |

Good Morning Ed If you followed the instructions in the work shop manual as I did, it recommends not using any sealer on the head gasket. But from my experience it will leak and ooze around the stud bolts and nuts. I solved my leak problems with the use of "Permatex Cooper spray-A-gasket" Item # 80697 (101MA). Just follow the instructions on the spray can. It is available at most parts stores, NAPA, Advanced and Pep Boys in my area. Use a match stick or q tip to put some extra around the studs. If memory serves me correctly, I think I backed out the studs bolts entering the engine block and coated the threads with the sealer also? I think I replaced the used head gasket and saved it as a spare for emergency use, just to be on the safe side. Follow the torque schedule in the manual and re check after engine warms up. Then re-torque after about 500 miles. This solved the problem for me. Hope this helps, John |

John is spot on about the Permatex (Copper Spray). How are the head studs? New ones are really good as the old ones stretch and really aren't as tight as you think. I know that feeling well, and it isn't good. Years ago took my just- cranked 280Z over to show my grandfather. Green coolant was dripping out several spots. That was a different problem than the T-cars however. George |
