MG TD TF 1500 - How to sell an MGT series
I am preparing to sell my restored MGTC EXU to make room for the mgtf 1500 nearing completion. I read MG laVerne's experience with auctions and am not sure what is the best approach to get a FAIR value for these cars. Many are overpriced, given the market. Any suggestions or experiences that you can share would be appreciated. LaVerne, I wondered whether you tried other approaches before choosing the auction option... Bob |

Robert My suggestions are, first, figure out what you want to get out of it. If you don't know then research what others in similar condition have recently sold for. Do your research. Then, I'd start the easy way and run an ad in selected local publications, also tell your other MG friends, and contact any local reputable antique car clubs...not the hot rod clubs. If that doesn't work, then expand to regional papers/ publications. If that doesn't work go national with the NEMGTR publication Sacred Octagon and/ or Hemmings. Just what I would do. If you want it to sell be realistic in your pricing and expectations- that way you'll likely sell it and both parties will be happy with the deal. Good luck. Brian W. |

Depending on how soon you want to sell your car on line sites have worked well for me. That said I do not sell collector cars to local buyers, I only sell to out of area buyers. Too many people think because of the cost of these cars they come with a warranty and once sold I don't want to see it again. Plus too many tire kickers. I have used "Cars on Line" and Hemmings with differing results. Both are sites real buyers check often. |

I did a "soft sell" approach Bob just to see if there was interest. Would I have done better with the established publications. I really doubt it but who knows. Lots of people are interested if you are willing to give it away...I probably would be as well. Bottom line is most buyers haven't a clue how many dollars it takes to get one in top shape. I do as well of most of us here. I got the money I spent on the car but not a penny for my labor...and there was a lot. I figure somebody got a damn good deal. It's the nature of the hobby. Some will get the money and more. More power to them. As for auctions..total crap shoot with no rhyme or reason to the results. I received fair market value for what top TD's had been selling for so I really can't complain. I really have no advice to give. I have sold family cars over the years and always received more than high book value because of the usually very low miles and great condition, but this is a different game and the webb opens a lot of doors but at the end it's a very limited market for a sale. |

Don't exclude the possibility of OS sales Rob. A local club member here in Sydney paid about $40,000 for a US TC here in Sydney about 3 years ago, though the AUD was in better condition then. It was a non original colour in reasonably good condition. Agree about the importance of research. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Great, thanks for the inputs and now I need to put my marketing plan together, starting with producing some decent pictures since they will be the primary introduction to the car. I will post some in the near future on this and the TABC site. When it is sold I will share the experience since many of us will be faced with the same challenge as we have to eventually part with cherished our treasure. This was my first T car... |

I have had good luck both buying and selling cars on the MG Experience website (http://www.mgexp.com/). Ads are free and it gets a lot of traffic from MG enthusiasts. It is where I found my TF. |

I bought my TF from an ad in Hemmings on line. If I sell it, I will use Hemmings. Reaches the right market. Tom '54TF |
