MG TD TF 1500 - How to test ignition warning lamp
I've installed the wiring harness, horns, fuse block and regulator on the tub but the lights, starter and dynamo/generator are not hooked up. Is there anyway to test the ignition warning lamp without those components installed. I have tested the bulb out of the housing and the continuity of the wires going to the ignition lamp housing and all is good. I'd like, if possible, to see if the bulb will come on in the housing before putting the tub on the frame. Thanks Tim TD12524 |

Tim, is the battery installed? If so, disconnect it.
You can test the operation of the ignition warning lamp easily. One side of the lamp is connected as one of 3 white wires on terminal A3 of the fuse box. The other side of the lamp is connected to a yellow wire on pin D of the regulator along with a yellow wire going to the generator. It's the smaller of the two wires at the generator. Since your generator isn't installed, the yellow wire is floating. Connect one side of a 12 volt battery to this floating yellow wire. Remove the white wire from the fuel pump. Now touch the other side of the 12 volt battery to that white wire. Your ignition warning light should illuminate. It doesn't matter which side of the battery goes where. Yes, you can use the car battery. This will test virtually all of the wiring in the ignition warning lamp circuit. Bud |

Bud, that worked like a charm. Thank you very much. The ignition light came when the wires were connected as you described. BTW, I'm using a Power Probe II to test the circuits. I wouldn't hook up a battery until every circuit had been tested. The Power Probe has an automatic shut off when it detects a short. It won't let you release any wire smoke. Regards Tim TD12524 |
