MG TD TF 1500 - I learned something new yesterday

Took both the TD and the TF to a local car show yesterday. Lots of varied cars but come to think of it now I had the only foreign jobs. Any who lots of nice people looking and they loved the side by side comparison of the two MG's. Later in the morning a slew of judges looked over the cars individualy packing clipboards and making marks and note. I walked over from my spot in the shade and mentioned to one of them that he was sure making a lot of marks..was that good or bad?? I inquired. Bad says he.. I says oh...whats the bad? He says well for example these wheels here (pointing to the TD) they should be knock off wires...like the car here next to it (the TF). I says no sir, they TD did not come from the factory with wire wheels. These are in fact the original wheels that this car was made with. I tell him I'd be happy to tell him everything that is not factory correct on either car but he declined. Needless to say neither car was a winner in the eyes of the judges but a fellow I ran into who I have helped with his Bugeye project had a 10 year old junior partner ( a program putting youth with mentors) that thought they both were.

what ya think?

Boy, it is a shame that TD is not original like your all original TF! I hope you showed them your five speed, sway bar, supercharger, etc. oh well, you have two fine cars there.

Gave up on the community shows if they do not have a foreign car category. I usually take the 67 MGB GT as it is the closest to a very nice restoration (TD was restored in 74 and the paint is getting poor). Problem is I compete against all the muscle cars and never have a chance.

I have gotten a few of the locals to add a foreign car category.

I went to an all Brirish car & bike show in Westtown Pa on saturday. Very refreshing to see that there are still shows that feature the marques. It was also a sanctioned Jaguar national event. Mgs, Triumphs Lotus, Mcclarins, Rolls, were all there. Very nice cars.

We just had a wonderful (albeit relatively small - 63 cars) all British car show in connection with the Highland Games at Furman University near Greenvelle SC. Austin Healeys were the featured marque (several really nice 100s) but there were also MGs (TD through rubber bumber Bs), Triumphs (250s and 6s - no 2s, 3, or my old favorite the 4s), a couple of Morgans including a 1935 3-wheeler, several Jags including a beautiful XK 120 and some outliers (a Hillman, an Anglia and a Land Rover). "Judging" was a popularity contest by the entrants but it was fun. My TD was the second oldest entrant (that Morgan will be tough to beat in that category) by 5 months.

I went to a local muscle car/hotrod show shortly after I got the TD and although I could appreciate their cars they had no idea what I was driving and really didn't care. Different strokes for different folks.

Laverne, sounds like a good show to boycott next year! Idiots!

Like the Pontiac LaVerne --- what was the asking price?
Dallas Congleton

I'm guessing he'd take less.

My gripe is with "knowlegeable" judges, who make categorical statements, which they in no way have to back up. I havde been known to keep a parts book and original advertizements at hand, to demonstrate that Mark II's should have two fuel pumps, that TD's never came with wire wheels, etc.

At least he didn't tell the engine should be in the back. LOL Speaking of that...shock for me last night ..had no idea the new VW bug's engines were in the front now! Friend bought one and told me it had no spare tire my laughter when he started to open the rear hatch stopped in a hurry! Did laugh again when showed him the tire under the cover back there.
I like the Lead Sled!

Your experience with the un-knowlegeable judge is one of the reasons I do not enter my cars, which are all driven year round, for judging. Furthermore, I do not relish the hours of cleaning with a toothbrush and Q tip for the preparation. I prefer to enter the cars for display only, let the judges bypass my cars and simply enjoy the show. The spectators will enjoy seeing your car, judged or not.

John,
Is that an AM 1100?
David Sheward

David Sheward, Never heard of an AM 1100 but are you referring to the white Austin America in the group car shot? If so, yes, it is a 1969 Austin America (1275cc) owned by me since 1971.

John Quilter (TD8986)

Good grief ...I've been out here in the sticks too long! Austin America was what I meant, came out as "Austin Merica". LOL We had an 1100! Haven't seen one of those for some time.
David Sheward

Well when I was a lad back in Keston, Kent. My Mum had one of these when she was local District Nurse.

We called it a Austin-Morris 1100 in those days.

The MG version looked similar but has an MG grill and had twin carbs. Too sporty for my Mum :)

Hey John,
Love that MKII, one of my favorite cars that I've owned.

Dave Clark: Actually not a MK II but the next model in the sequence, a 3.8S which has been owned by my family since 1966. Full details at: http://www.allcarcentral.com/John_F_Quilter.html

Mr. John Quilter

John,

Your comments and photos from the "All Car Central" article, which I just now finished viewing and reading, were as enjoyable an experience I have had in learning more about our LBCs! Thank you so much for revealing your personal history and feelings regarding your wonderful automobiles. I dare say, each one of us reviewing your recollections found more than one instance of nostalgia and emotion-felt stirring. Hopefully, you might be moved to provide us with information about your MG TD.

Also, would you find it possible to provide me with an E-mail address whereby I might contact you only occasionally?

Congratulations on a fine history.

Sincerely,

Jerry
