MG TD TF 1500 - I still have Gremlins
My restoration took place over 46 years.
Around 2015 I finally got the TD, Elvira, back on the road. I have only about 500 mi since. Only short trips, less than 20 miles, checking after each one for loose bolts etc. I am trying to build confidence to go further. Every day we, wife an I, go to the park and back, about 3 mi round trip. Last fall, when I put it away it seemed to be all ok and I was looking to some extended trips. First run, the radiator and the water pump were leaking. Then: All the bolts around the front of the engine were loose. The dashpot pistons unscrewed. rear shock link rubbers deteriorated (Dated from, at least 1966, never replaced) The rear brake line rubbed through. Just this week the rubber gasket on the oil filter failed, squirting oil all over the place. Lost about 1/2 quart in a mile. I knew I would have some startup issues but these seem to be going on for ever. Jim B. |

Hi Jim, I commiserate with you but am not surprised. After a rebuild there are so many niggles that need to be sorted. I smile at the advertisements that say "just been rebuilt, perfect running order and ready to enjoy". My niggles included dropping the sump twice to sort the oil leak from the front of the crank!
