MG TD TF 1500 - I wonder where they come from

Saw this beauty on E bay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MG-T-Series-1953-MGTD-FROM-CALIFORNIA-FOR-TOTAL-RESTORATION_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4ceec31c0dQQitemZ330423278605QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks

Cant figure out if he is kidding on the buy now price or what.
Tom Maine

Probably not kidding. People who don't really know the value of old cars think every old wreck is worth the kind of money they see on the Barrett-Jackson TV auctions. Unless some other fool comes along reality eventually catches up. :-)

This was on couple months ago and someone went above $6K then and still hadn't meet reserve. No way in my book at 6K even.

"The color combination is one of the best". I agree, so why bother restoring it and mess up that beautiful finish? Huh?

Where else you going to find this kind of "Patina" for a mear $12k ?
Maybe I should turn a couple rabbit racoons lose in the TF and list it for sale?

Yeah but you guys are overlooking the ebay $50,000 purchase protection program for which this beauty qualifies.

Original and complete! The tach drive appears to be missing off the back of the generator, at least I don't see it and heaven knows what else we can't see. Now if he holds on to it for another 10/20 years, he might have someone who will approach his price, well, maybe. (Grin). PJ

I agree that it is not a $12,000 car, but I don't think you guys are being entirely fair - I rise in defence of the barn find. I've always bought orphans like this, and find that they are wonderful cars when sorted out.

This is a black license-plate CA car (probably with no rust or rot), with original seats and at least one original door panel. Probably painted only once, looking rough around the edges but basically a solid $5-6,000 car. It clearly has not been 'restored' or butchered. I see hardly any dents, it really does seem to missing only the tach drive (Gold Seal engine?), and what appears wrong clearly is - the speedo, the steering wheel, interior, etc.

$12,000 no, $6,000, yes. But a $6,000 car worthy of respect.

I agree with you Tom. I'd rather see one bought whole rather than parted out. Some folks have so much money it doesn't matter. Besides it increases the value of our cars. Half the fun's in the rebuild. Keeps us old retired guys busy. It would be interesting to know how many of the T series are left.

I also would rather see one bought whole rather than parted out. It makes me warm & tingly inside to see one "brought back" from years of neglect. I would love to see this one go to someone that would do that. Problem is, with a "buy it now" set @ $12,500 it seems the chances are this one could very well end up as "parts" instead. Somewhere around $5k (or less) would be more reallistic price and more in-line with current values. At that price the old girl would have a chance at being "re-sorted". At $12,500 your looking at another $12k to bring her back (even if you do the work yourself) IMHO not that many people willing to put that kind of money into the project.

I'm sympathetic to those who would rather see one sold 'in whole' than parted-out, except I remember that perhaps a dozen or more parted-out cars sacrificed a part or two for Tommy, including one MGA. And he was fairly complete before I started the restoration.
