MG TD TF 1500 - Impressive TD Photo
Found this photo on a web site Clayton Merchant mentioned in another thread. I thought it was really neat, and scary! http://www.lbcnuts.com/mg/historicaltseries/bill_watkins_td_roll.jpg I've been in contact with the driver. He nearly rolled the car but thankfully saved it. |

Think perhaps a trip to the "Roll Bar" store is in order......???? |

Looks like he found a second use for one of his wheel ramps, just jam it behind the seat and call it a roll bar! Great Photo. |

Forgot to give the details... The driver is Bill Watkins. The photo was taken at Palm Springs airport using airport transfers tunbridge wells in January, 1960. |

If the driver is racing, I wonder why he hasn't removed his spare wheel, as most other sundry items have been taken off ? |

Roger He could be practicing for the Italian Job! |

Working from 40 odd years of memory (not so good any more) I think we were required to remove the bumpers which served no useful purpose. The spare was considered good protection for the very vulnerable gas tank. Jimbo 6 1953 MG TD |

Is the driver cornering or did he drive over some kind of ramp? If he was cornering I wonder how extreme his tire-pressure was! The tires aren't deformed very much? |

The other scary thing is he looks like he is leaning on the door for suport . With the TD's door latch system being one notch down from the latch on most sceen doors I would say the man has large brass you know whats . |

Just found my picture and the comments on your site. I ran the spare tire because in 1960 all cars were required to carry spares. We were not required to have roll bars but I installed one that was a space frame design which I think would have been effective, but fortunately it was never tested. As for having brass you know what, I didn't plan that you know. Never had problem with the door. The picture first appeared on the front page of MotoRacing, Feb. 5, 1961 along with a picture of a Fiat Abarth that was nearly scraping the door handles and an Austin Healey that was rolling. I think that it was caused by a step at a seam in the runway. If you want to see more, look at: http://www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/BillWatkins.html |
