MG TD TF 1500 - Improved Brakes
Just been watching an episode of Wheeler Dealers where they are working on an old Volvo. It was one of the later shows filmed in the States where all the required work is listed but little is shown on how it is carried out. There were two interesting points though. Ed is shown tuning twin SUs and the section where he lifts the pistons to check mixture strength is worth a watch. (Ignore the bit where he balances the throttles without slackening the connecting link though). The other, and more interesting point is the change of brake linings to Kevlar ones. Mike wants to convert the car to discs but Ed fits uprated Kevlar ones and they are as effective as discs. As these available for a T Series?

Good question. When the show originally aired I tried to find out where the lining they used came from without success. I'll be interested to see if anyone knows where it can be obtained. I assume you can still get brake lining riveted to shoes. Tim |

Ted Schumacher of TS Imports in Pandora, Ohio used to provide Kevlar shoes for Tcars. Check the archives. He stopped it a few years ago. Bud |

The drums for these cars, last time I checked are hard to come by...the energy is expended somewhere. Are the Kevlar linings grinding up your rare drums ? Regards, Tom |

Tim, Rimmer Brothers in the UK has rivited linings with rivets, $60.00 a set of 4. I saved my original shoes in case I wanted to re-line them, but the bonded linings work very well, plus I just put new drums on the car and the brakes improved a bit more. PJ |

The original twin leading shoes are sized for our cars, actually have better stopping power than disc brakes (that's why all cars nowadays need vacuum boosters) and don't have the drag and heat issues.
I have to say our MGB disc brakes do not drag, thank goodness, but disc brakes usually drag and get worse with age as the caliper seal gets harder and corrosion. The one cheap & easy method for improved braking power is to sleeve the master cylinder down to smaller diameter... renew an old casting and smaller piston will pump higher pressure. I spent umteen hours machining and brazing a Chevette mastercylinder with smaller ID to fit, providing dual circuit for safety. But why is it, every time a vehicle of mine blows one brake line, it looses all braking power? |

If one line blown causes a total loss of braking, then it couldn't be a true dual system. I wonder if the two halves of the system use the same fluid reservoir? |

Here's another approach, one that I installed in Lazarus. But, my servo is above the rear axle, behind the seat. http://www.ttalk.info/TinkerServo.htm Bud |
