MG TD TF 1500 - Incomplete fuse security in a TF?

From the archives I can see that fuses are a recurring issue on this BBS.

It has begun to dawn on me that some (even major) parts of the wire loom in my TF1500 is not protected by in-crcuit fuses. If I am right about this, a single water tight corrosion free fusebox on the negative battery lead would perhaps be a good idea. (I run positive ground as per original)

What size should a "common trunk" fuse be to handle headlamps, horns etc , i.e. handling peak loads and still blowing when short circuits occur to prevent fires? Or will I need to fuse single elements?

Thank you for answering me on this concern which I believe I share with many of you,

Jan, One thing you need to give consideration to is the starter circuit. The amperage draw, even momentary, is much higher than the rest of the system. I would think if a fuse or circuit breaker of determined value is installed, it would have to be after the starting circuit. Just a thought to consider. Needless to say, Mr Lucas wasn't thinking very clearly when he decided to install one 30 amp fuse to handle most of the systems needs. If I was to design a new system for these cars, it would be with relays and push button circuit breakers, something not practical in the 40s and 50s. PJ

The starter circuit obviously needs attention, and my idea of a single "common trunk" fuse may not be such a good idea then. Old Joe Lucas had his way of doing things. This qoute is attributed to him I believe;
" Joe's my name, darkness is my game."

Actually the quote is:

When a customer complained about the lack of reliability of Lucas electric lights on his car Mr. Lucas is said to have replied: “No proper gentleman would wish to drive after dark anyway.”

From an e-mail I received some time ago:

J. Lucas Ltd. has recently announced that the company no longer claims to have invented absolute darkness, but they do emphasize that they have now applied for British patent rights to the slogan "Inventors of sudden, unexpected darkness"
