MG TD TF 1500 - Instrument cluster color-TF
My TF came to me with the instrument cluster back plate covered with a black fabric, which looks like textured vinyl. I've heard various comments on what is right and what is not. My question is, what is the original factory color of the back plate? Was it covered or painted? If painted, is there a paint code for it? Any photos of an un touched original? PJ |

Painted, not covered. It is roughly the same tan as the steeringwheel hub. Moss has a spray lacquer that is close to the right color. It is the same paint as for the TD instrument cluster. -David |

Shown here. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtf/Pictures/Unrestored/Thumbnails/mgtf_gallery_unrestored.htm Certainly more of a burnt tan than what Moss sells as shown here. Same goes for the steering wheel hub. Caused from aging? |

ditto, what the others said. See unrestored dash image attached. I think the Moss color is close. I am not sure but I think the TD may be slightly darker than the TF. JB |

Thanks guys, that's what I was looking for. I think I have some of Mosses hub paint, but it looks a little darker than what I'm looking at on LaVernes plate. PJ |

This is an "older batch" of what Moss sold 12+ years ago. From what I hear the "newer" is not as good a match.

Another unrestored panel, this one on my car. The paint is slightly metallic with alost a hammered finish which does not show up well in the photo. It probably would have had a soft gold look when new. Matthew |

Hi All, JB and Matt.Magilton's TF colour is spot on. Most suppliers paint is far too light from original.I suspect TDs used quite a different, lighter colour originally. For TFs,GMH (1974) "Cognac" is very close to both JB's car and Matt's.Has that 'gold' lustre. Your local auto paint dealer should be able to mix it up. Cheers. GMH Paint, Found it! PJ General Motors Holden - 1974 "Cognac" Code 2G011 Metalic |

Paul I found an automobile spray can colour which is very close to the original, I believe it is probably available in the States. The colour is bronze with a slight metallic tint and is a very close match to Matthews photo. I painted my instrument panel and roof frame with it. If you want the details drop me an email. |
G Evans |
Mr Evans, I will drop you an email for more info on the color you found. I discovered that in 1974 no American General Motors automobiles had GMH Cognac 2G011 paint on it, interior or exterior. It must have been on some over seas models and not available here. PJ |

I think a good place to look for original color is under the center medallion on steering wheel. Comparing mine to the Moss paint on the instrument panel it is quite close-the original under the medallion is slightly pinker. JB |
