MG TD TF 1500 - Instrument Panel Paint
Has anyone determined that the Moss paint is the right color for the instrument panel? Looks kinda goldish to me. Is there a recommended color/brand? PJ |

If it comes from Moss Paul I'd be wary. The best bet is to check with Chris Couper. If anyone's likely to know he would. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Like where do elephants go to die? One of life's great mysteries. As far as I know, nobody has been able to EXACTLY reproduce the TF dash panel paint colour - ditto, the steering wheel hub. Some have come close, but sorry - no cigar! Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Yeah, I think the problem is that all of our cars have experienced considerable sunlight for over 60 years and this greatly changes any painted surface, so much so that determining what is 'original' is quite difficult. I believe I used Krylon #1701 "Bright Gold" when I restored mine, but I'm not certain... I have a partial leftover can of it in my stocks so I'm pretty sure that's what I used. Also, I should note that Krylon has recently reformulated all their paints such that - incredibly annoyingly - you must now re-coat within 1 hour, or wait up to *48 hours* before re-coating. If you apply any coats between those times you'll almost certainly have it all pickling and wrinkling up. And God forbid that you sand between coats... you need to wait even longer. I learned this the hard way on a home project and absolutely ruined the paint job by lightly sanding (to smooth it between coats) and then adding a second coat... it quickly pickled so badly that I had to completely strip off all the paint and start my refinishing all over again. Grrr! :( Anyway, the purpose of the story is that your mileage may vary on the Krylon of today being the same as it was not long ago (or any brand of today's paints, since most other mfg's have also recently reformulated similarly)... test a sample first. That being said, in the photo of my interior, below, you can see that the unrestored steering wheel hub is considerably more 'yellow-green' than the newly painted dash panel. However, I'm not all that sure both the wheel and the panel were actually finished in the exact same color when they were new... does anyone know? |

Just an inquiry is the color of the TD panel same as TF, in as much as I am redoing my dash this fall/winter |

I don't know if the Moss paint is the right color, but I think the hub and panel were originally the same color. Here's a picture showing the original hub and panel on my '53. They show some of the ravages of time, but they are still a very close match, more so in person than in the picture. Joe |

Pretty sure Paul is asking for a TF. (Also pretty sure TD & TF were different.) |

Paul, I matched the best surviving colors for my dash and center console. I spent a lot of time comparing color chips in different lighting conditions. To my eye, it is pretty close and I'm happy how it came out. I've come to the conclusion when doing my car when it comes to paint is... "paint it to the closest match possible". You'd go crazy. This is a thread I posted a while back. http://www2.mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=8&subjectar=8&thread=201405060119348121 |

Chris Couper's TD and TF websites show the same color for both for the TD and TF panels, and Moss sells only one color paint for TC-TD-TF instrument panels. At $32 a can, I would really hope that it is the correct color! Joe |
