MG TD TF 1500 - intake manifold #168434 ?

I bought this off of eBay last night. It was advertised as a 1 1/2" intake for TD. Is this a MK II or something else? I paid $59 for it and quite frankly thought it would go much higher had it been a Mk II piece. Any body shed light on the part # and its application?

Cheers

Bill You may have seen this already, but it is some info on manifolds.

Wahoo!!! Thanks Richard for the info. I had not seen it. Looks like I have a legitimate MK II manifold as it has the fingers to mount the air cleaner. Gee, I feel like I made a big score. I didn't want to modify my stock manifold to fit the H4s. Now I can keep my original H@ set up together and have a proper H4 setup for my Laystall. Im jazzed up!

Well now, that's interesting! If I'm reading the article correctly, it's stating the TFs did not have the fingers on the intake manifold! Here's my matching number cars engine and other than it's repo air cleaners, it's original. Look at it's manifold. If I'm reading this correctly, the article stating this is the wrong manifold for my engine, I don't believe it! Sounds like another wantabe pulling info out of thin air just to print an article. No one will convince me that in the last two years of production, Abingdon had different manifolds cast for TF engines. Hope I didn't step on any toes, but that's just me. PJ

Thanks, Paul. I'll say something nice about you, too, someday. Bud

That's okay Paul. Your not stepping on my toes or squashing my feelings. Oops, Feelings, Are guys supposed to use that word and admit it. LOL My manifold has studs instead of bolts, I guess that makes mine wrong also, but hey, I'm just glad that I will have the correct intake that has straight ports and I don't have to spend a couple hours hogging out and blending an 1 1/4" intake to work with the H4s. Maybe it's not as rare as I thought it was but I now how one and I'm tickled pink.

Went looking for more info on the 168434 manifold and found another discussion with photos...while the discussion doesn't discuss the "fingers", the last photo does show them on what is supposed to be a 1500.

Here is my 1250 TF with the "fingers" manifold.

RE: "Fingers" on TF manifolds ...

I read the original thread from April 2006. It's a pretty neat thread. It appears that the statement about fingers on TF manifolds was the result of a 3-way phone conversation about the openings on a TC manifold. Fingers were not the focus, just a passing comment.

Members of the BBS reported fingers on their TF manifolds later in the thread.

And yes -- my TF-1500 #7211 has fingers (photo in Gene's post, before I painted and detailed my engine.) Unrestored TF9052 has them, too. The final TF chassis number was 10100, so IMHO, it's doubtful that any TFs had intake manifolds without fingers.

I have about 30 photos of 54 and 55 TF engines and not one of them has a stock, (notice I said stock), intake manifold without the fingers. Kinda makes sense that Abingdon is not going to tool up to make new manifolds for two years on the same engines, just because they installed different air cleaners. PJ

Thanks everyone for the additional links. Very informative to this newbie. Although I'm likely going to use the SU brand open element air cleaners I'm interested in knowing / seeing the rest of the intake setup for a early TD MK II. Was the air cleaner pipe different? What was it's part #? Was the air cleaner the same or did they all use a bigger unit? What was the diameter and what did it look like?

Also, re the bulge on the right bonnet side panel...Is it the same size as the dynamo bulge? what is the dimension and where exactly is its placement on the side panel. I realize that the open element air cleaners will likely make it a moot point but I wish to make the panel up if and when I decide to put the oil bath air cleaner back on along with the side panels.

Thanks in advance

Bill, according to SPL AKD834, Section R (TD/C) the Pipe-air cleaner for the TD/C was changed to Part No. X24271. The standard TD Pipe is Part No. X35063. The TD/C air cleaner is larger. Bud
Bud Krueger

Thanks Bud I'll make note of that.

I've edited the http://www.ttalk.info/Tech/intake_manifolds.htm page to state that Sara's comments on the "fingers" were in error. Bud

Not to hijack a thread,,, but what ever happened to Sara???? Haven't heard from her in quite a while!
Steve Wincze

Looks like a TF manifold to me, with fingers and studs.

Tom, the Service Parts List, AKD834, Section R, MKII Supplement says: Inlet Manifold...Part No. SA2440/1. Could it also have been used later for TF's? Why not? Bud
