MG TD TF 1500 - Interchangeable TF parts

I have recently purchased a 54 TF with under 14k on the clock. The car had a bad starter and upon removal, I thought that it looked familiar and sure enough, it was the same starter that is used on my 63 Sprite. Installed it and works no problem. Did an oil change and thought that oil filter looked familiar and sure enough, going thru my parts bin, used an MGB MK1 filter that I had in stock. Other than the twin 1.5 inch SU's, I was wondering if anyone elsed knew what parts were interchangable with the later MG/Austin cars? Yes, it does have MGB V8 bushes up front. Thanks for the tips in advance.

I found some front end parts are the same for an MGA and a TF. What I did was check the part numbers in the Moss catalogs for the A and the T series. Many numbers the same. I haven't done this but cross referencing with a "B" might find some more.

Front end parts (swivel, spring pan, A arms) are all the same from Y Type salons through the MGB. The only differences is that the MGB has a reinforced hole in the A arm for the front sway bar, which doesn't interfere with using the arm on any of the older cars. Cheers - dAve

You'll also find that the driveshaft universal joints are the same from early T-series through the MGB. Many differential parts are swappable from TD thru banjo type MGBs.

Hi Mark,

Congrats on your TF acquisition! I look forward to seeing it. Sadly, I am not making any progress on mine (Robin's).

Thanks Carl, I was surprised that noone else in your neck of the woods didn't jump on this one. I considered the one that you got, but I was too slow! Thanks to all that replied with their info.

Mark,

I don't know if anyone up here was aware of it. Where did you find it? Robin would prefer a driver to a restoration. :)

I ran across a young Pharmacist that is going to be working on fixing up his Dad's '54 TF. It is in Bristol. He said his Dad knows of another TF in Bristol, as well.

My Dad is thinking real hard on a TC. I was going to try to talk him out of it, then changed MY mind. If he talk my Mom into it, why not? :)

Carl,
Actually, he had contacted the club there in Kingsport and was pointed towards me in getting her back on the road. It had been in this country for about 3 years up on jack stands. Came out of New Zealand. Was imported from the UK back in 78. The owner contacted me before Thanksgiving to get her back on the road and after not hearing from him for over a month, I contacted him and he is having to leave the country for a year on business. He told me it was for sale and we struck on a price that I couldn't pass up.

It was just down the road a couple of miles from Eastman. Even came with an unfitted new top, side curtains and full tonneau! She runs out beautifully. Apparently an older restoration as the chrome and wood is excellent as well as the body and mechanics are in really good condition.

Tell your dad to go for the TC. After the 60k for the one at BJ they seem to be picking up a new head of steam!

WHAT?!!!

He didn't contact our club, he sent me an email asking if I knew someone that could help him get it running. I gave him your name & number. Told him that you were the only person I would trust to work on my MGs besides myself. He never said where he lived, but for some reason I thought he was in the Knoxville area. He did say he would come up and visit at a club meeting when he got it running. Had I know he was right here in Kingsport I would have gone over and helped him get it going.

So, you're welcome, Mark. You owe me a ride. :)

You got it Carl. And thank you for your kind comments.

One addition to Dave DuBois comment is that the Spring Pans from an MGB are also reinforced like the A arms. These two parts on each side accommodate the anti-sway bar link. I retrofitted my MG TD last year with these parts from a B. It really stabilizes the front end.

Thanks for that idea, Jim.

I put a 3/4" Bar on my 'B V8. Being the pack rat that I am, I still have the old, stock bar. Now I know what to do with it, put it on the TF.
