MG TD TF 1500 - Interesting TD with Judson supercharger for sale

Hi,
There is an interesting MG TD with Judson Supercharger for sale on Ebay.

look at ebay no 322389748664

It is a restoration project with a lot of work.

What also interests me is what looks like a finned sump.

I thought only TC's and very early TD's had those.

Hope the link works...
(Already expensive imho. Seems to be a late TD with an early engine indeed.)

Some innocent is in for a rude awakening.

The engine and windshield appear to be wrong, both fairly substantial problems - the poor condition of the body tub metal and wood is even greater. Other missing parts are legion; this is truly a barn find needing a COMPLETE restoration.

The redeeming features include the Judson (surely needing a $1,000 overhaul) worth perhaps $1,500 as-is, and steel Borrani wheels with knock-offs and spare wheel carrier, worth another $1,500. Note that the wheels are rusty - if they were aluminum Borrani's they would be worth a good deal - but not steel. For this car's $8,000 current bid one could buy a decent, running, complete car that would look respectable on the road.

ANYTHING can be restored, but this car would require more than it is worth, IMHO - t's a $3,500 car with $3,000 in extras.

Finned sump could be appropriate for a 53. Bud

Judson Supercharger - heater - had a radio at one time. Looks like a rubber garden hose on the steering wheel. Engine looks correct. My 53 has the finned sump.
Tail lens are dumb looking for this car.
hand crank and says the engine is not locked up.
This would be fun to rebuild. Cost be dammed. What is money for anyway. I already gave mine away. Ask my wife.

Finned sump okay !
Seems to have the early style oil filter though. (difficult to see on photos)

By the looks of the wood it needs a complete new frame. Rust through in some panels, plus where else. To redo it to show condition it would cost twice as much as the car would be worth if you did all the work, forget having a shop redo it, unless of course you have a ton of money to burn! I agree with Tom, it's a $3500 car at best in it's present condition. JMHO. PJ

In $NZ, that's about 100,000 worth of work. Pity. At that cost, the base price is almost irrelevant.

Well there goes another one left out in a open field. I seen worse because somebody threw a plastic tarp over it. Used to be that Judsum broke the crankshaft by some rattled loose some big end bolts, but motor still turns over. like they do when broke.

The TB and TC had their own finned sump. The TD was introduced with the same plain sump as fitted to the Y type. The sump had tapped holes and a fulcrum pin on both sides for operating the clutch on LHD and RHD cars. This sump had it's capacity increased and ribs added in April 1952, and was introduced on engine XPAG/TD2/14948 - it is the one on the Ebay supercharged TD.

May have been an interesting car in its day, but its close to a parts car now. Not that it can't be restored, but wow, you are looking at a whole lot of work.

Last bidder appears to be a dealer or broker as he has been bidding on a number of cars lately.

I mean, just what is on the hood in first shot?

The cushion is used to prevent the bonnet tearing at the rear fixing. It takes the load off when in the open position. I believe that this precaution wasn't necessary when the cars were new. This is discussed somewhere in the archive. Cheers
