MG TD TF 1500 - Interior Footwell Panels

There is currently a red TD for sale on eBay. One of the photos shows the dash board and the RHS foot well. The front interior quarter panel appears to go behind the body hoop. The corresponding panel which came with my car (allbeit non original and very tatty) went over the hoop. The backing behind my vinyl is a type of rubberised cardbaord which can be bent easilly. Unfortunately it is in poor condition and I was concerned where I could get a new sheet from. If the panels are flat I can use thin plywood. Can anyone please advise.

ps the white TD on eBay has a much nicer dashboard.

You don't want to use plywood for these panels, because it will break when bending it over the hoop. I used the Moss kit, which has some kind of fiber board backing for these panels. I don't know where you would find this without buying the kit from Moss, but I'd start by looking at auto upholstery suppliers.

In fact, one mistake I made when installing my Moss panel kit was trying to bend the panels in place. They tend to 'break' at the high point of the bend (the hoop) and create a visible angled corner. If I had bent them carefully out of the car, I probably could have gotten a smoother bend. It's a small fault, but it's a bit annoying to look at.

Jan: Those panels are totally wrong as well as the carpeting.

If this is a 9.9+ out of 10 car, then it must be using a logarithmic scale. Having said that it is one of the better cars seen on e-Bay.

Chris is right as they must be using a strange self designed scale. In the engine comparment I spotted the following things wrong. Wrong color on air filter , wrong type hose clamps, improper color on bonnet latches, aftermarket oil filter, wiring not properly placed around fuse panel. Dash board does not have chrome trim . Spare wheel appears to be spaced too far out from fuel tank. Head light brackets are not right color. Nut on headlight bracket appears to be rusty. These are in addition to those that Chris mentioned. I think he was being polite. Even with all these things wrong with it I would let it park for an extended stay in my garage,I assure you that there would be more miles put on it than 180 as stated.

Buyer Beware........ All that glitters is not gold....
that goes for MG's too.
Jan I will email you, or anyone else a pix of the interior panels.

There is a type of material (I would call it wood-based fibreboard) with properties between cardboard and plywood, used frequently in back panels in cabinets. This material can be more easily curved than plywood, and if you dampen it a little, it can be perfectly bent to the shape required for the interior panel.

I do not the name in English, but I can take some pictures of it and send them to you.

Regards.

State-side I found the correct materials at Joe-Ann Fabrics! CHEAP! I spent all of $40.00 on materials to re-do my footwells & boot compartment. Funny how you can find the same materials for different "uses" at much lower prices.
Don't be afraid to look "outside" the normall venues.
I find this to be the case offten. One of the best examples....our little 4 cyc dizzy caps..same Lucas part # when purchased for an old John Deer farm tractor is $9.95....when purchased as an "M.G.T part" $$.$$! Quite frankly the only differance I noticed is the "tractor" one appears to be made from better materials than it's Hong-Kong counterpart!

Here's another (UK) saving - Black side screen box felt for the TD/TF from Moss costs £36.95! I got mine from http://www.fabricuk.com for £6.49 per meter with a width of 60", and this is twice as much as you need!
