MG TD TF 1500 - Jim Taylor - Carb Rebuilder

Anyone know if he is still rebuilding carburetors? Looking through the archives I found that he is only a few miles from me. Probably not my luck.
Joe Curto hasn't responded to my email, even though there's no rush. PJ
Paul161

Mr. Taylor passed away several years ago.
Lew3

I'd call Curto instead of emailing him. I don't think he is focused on email.
David Littlefield

Thanks Lew, I didn't know that. Any other carb rebuilders around Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas? PJ
Paul161

Paul - There are three fellows that come to mind, all stand out for quality work, Joe Curto, Dave D. & Lew. For my money, a quick turn around I'd use Lew Palmer in Minn, Lew@roundaboutmanor.com. I've seen his work and have recently purchased one of his rebuilt pumps from a friend. Scott in WV

Paul, you might also try Jimmy Hilton in Carrollton, Texas.

Paul, if you look in the TSO you'll see an ad that looks just like Jim Taylor's old ad. I believe that Bob Johnson was Jim's protege and took over after Jim died. Bob's in Claremont OK. Bud

Scratch Dave D. from the list of those who work on carburetors - he only does fuel pumps. I suspect that you are thnking of Dave Braun, wo does do carburetors. Cheers - Dave D.
DW DuBois

That would be Dave Braun with a B.... In Minnesota

For the record, as I have also been contacted off forum:
I rebuild SU pumps, but NOT carbs. I also design and manufacture LED tail lamp inserts for TC, Y types, TA, TB (all ST51), and pre-war for PA, PB, NA, NB, or anything using the ST38 Pork Pie lamp.
I do windscreen logo etching kits for pre-war, and TD and TF,
and I do the Petrolift labels and gauge faces for Triple-M cars.

But NOT carburetors.

I can HIGHLY recommend Bob Johnson as a measured, fair and competent rebuilder. He recently did a pair of Mark II carbs (rare ones), did EXACTLY what changes I asked, and had them back in just a few weeks.

Again, HIGHLY recommended, and MUCH faster than other restorers.

Wonder what you guys are paying to have carburetors rebuilt versus purchasing a new set from Burlen. I took the latter approach as I had no idea what previous owners had accomplished in their efforts to maintain/butcher mine.

There's also Chris Kellner in Coppell, TX. Locals here swear by him, though I have no personal experience or contact info.

I've replaced two sets of Burlen/Moss carbs - the new ones - in the past few years because they just plain wore out. My opinion is that the materials are simply not as good as the earlier genuine SU carbs.

I sell only completely refurbished original SU carbs with my superchargers, and have never had a problem. I and my customers prefer them to "new" ones.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, very much appreciated. I will probably send them to Dave Braun after I get my new rear from Dave Clark in. I forgot that Dave rebuilt carbs, we've communicated before, quite a while ago. PJ
Paul161

No one wants to own up, case similar to my fishing gear. When I go dont let the missus sell my stuff for what I told her I paid for it".

Be very keen to know what is wearing out on the new Burlen SUs, the amount of grief expressed here regarding carbies has reinforced that I made the best choice.
G Evans

The Moss ad for their new SU carbs states, "Rebuilt carbs are nice, but after decades of abuse they’ll never look or perform as well as new ones". I find that hard to believe with the professionals we have restoring them. Of course, you have to state something to entice someone to pay 1500 bucks for two carbs, LOL. PJ
Paul161

Bud, I wasn't aware of it but, Bob Johnson did take over Mr. Taylors business as you said and I just spoke to him on the phone. I also didn't know he is a member of our club, the Green Country MG Register. PJ

I had Jim rebuild the carburetors that came with Lazarus' engine about 25 years ago. Threads were shot and had to be heli-coiled. A real mess from having sat for a long time with fuel in them. He did an outstanding job. Unwrapped them, put them on the car, turned on the key, listened to the last click of the fuel pump, pulled the starter -- Vroom!! (Those were his directions, I had already cranked it for oil pressure.) I believe that there was a mention of his passing in TSO. Bud
Bud Krueger

FYI I have my TD carbs in with Curto for new throttle shaft/bushing install, he mentioned he has a 12-15 week backlog so that may be why he is not as responsive to emails right now.

Dont know where you are getting your new SU carby prices from, I believed the $US1500 price was over the top.

Confirmation on the Burlen site provided Non Sports model TD Pair at 750.20 Brish Pounds which on todays conversion rate is $US1144.82. OK your up for some freight however cant see that the nearly $US400 price hike is justified.

Companies that are car model specific will always have inflated prices, shop around is my advice. I purchased my TF carby set for $A1200 which included freight when the $A was thriving at $US1.50. The labour and replacement parts components to rebuild my own would have far surpassed this amount.

The quality of what I received was bolt on, fuel up and hit the ignition to have a running engine, minimal tuning was required.
G Evans

Yes, Burlen sells the set for just over 750 Pounds, but as Moss likely buys directly from Burlen (Where else?), they have the costs of freight costs, warehousing costs, sales costs, labor costs, import duty, etc. They are due some profit including when they sell to their distributors at a 20% discount. So I don't see that a 30% margin before all these costs is unjustified.
Moss and AS are providing a service without which you would not be restoring and enjoying your LBC.
Lew3

Bob Johnson is rebuilding my carbs. I saw a set he just rebuilt for a Magnette and they looked like new with new shafts, butterfly's, floats, jets and needles. Quite impressive to say the least. PJ
Paul161

I forgot to ad, I'll have my carbs back in 3 weeks. PJ
