MG TD TF 1500 - Just when you think you're finished.....

OK, just when you think you're finished, another car comes along. After 2 years of steady work on my '53 TD MkII, which is almost re-assembled, I just found another '53 TD. The engine and transmission are intact, and out of the car, the fenders are off, but look good, the doors, tank, spare rack, carbs, radiator and shell, seats and headlamps are off the car, but present. The rolling chassis has some rust, but not bad. The interior is toast. The windscreen and bonnet are missing (but I have a spare windscreen).

The last time I just finished a restoration, about 7 years ago, on an MGB, I was approached by a guy who had an MGB like mine, in primer, ready to be reassembled. I bought it for $800, restored it and sold it 1 1/2 years later, to pay for my MGA.

Now, it seems, here we go again. The price on this TD is much more than the MGB was, but it seems too good to pass up, esp. since I can use the instruments in my car. But my wife will be VERY unhappy if I bring home another car, let alone a "roller." Plus, I'm stretching to finish the first one, so restoring a second TD is out out the question for now. But I do have a lot of parts left from the first restoration.. Hmmm.

Advice?

I would think that doing another one fairly recently would make the second one go faster. It did for me when I did a second one 4 years after the first.

Ira,
Go for it....she did agree to "for better or worse, richer or poorer" ...right? A second "T" will no doubt make you poorer! Tell her you are building that one for her.

OK, here I am two years and one week into the restoration of my '53 MkII, which should be finished this year, and I did it; I agreed to buy the '53 TD that I saw over the weekend. I told my wife it's a donor car (which it might be).

This will probably force me to build a garage....

I like dave's idea, a his and hers set of T's. But all jokes aside i would say go for it, if you have some parts left over from the other restoration that could be used on this one you won't lose much. Plus you know where to get parts cheap (hopefully)and of course you have all of us here at the BBS. =)

Good ideas! I bought it; delivery yet to be set up. My daily driver will now be banished to outdoor parking. I think my wife likes driving the MGB too much to get her to drive a TD; but, then again, my older daughter will probably drive the B (if I can teach her to drive stick without burning out the clutch!!).

Best to all for the holidays,

Ira
