MG TD TF 1500 - kit car
Was sitting on my porch on Sunday with the TD (waxed and cleaned) in the front drive.... A red TD went by slowly and turned around and pulled in. A man and wife got out and oh'ed and aw'd over it...."is this 'original'???etc, etc. Had noticed those funny 'hinges' on the hood (and the distinctive VW sound). He showed me the trunk (under the bonnet) and pulled back the gas tank to show me the engine....??? Had a chance at least to look at the body... pretty good mold whoever pulled it .... looked to be pretty exact. Pretty sure it used the MG rad shell....different headlight mounts and windshield mounts (looked to be aluminum, but the same shape). Lot more depth in the cockpit from the VW floor pan, so more room between the top of the seat and the floor. Car seemed a few inches higher... Anyway... wished them well (they were as excited about it as I am about mine)!!! |

Saw a kit on Sunday too! Was out with the family and we passed a man in a kit leaving his driveway. Both of my boys yelled "MG!" I said "nope, its a fake..." |

Was at a car show a few years ago. Parking attendent saw the TD and parks me right next to a kit. We get out and the wife of the kit owner says "Oh I see you have an MG also!. My wife says with a big smile, Yes, and our's is a real one. (my license is Real MG) |

The youth minister from a local church stopped by the house to say hello to my son. I was working on the partially covered up TD project and he says "how is your kit car comming?". I guess from the look on my face, he immediately says, "oh, I guess it is real". It was sooo funny! George |

Q: "Hey, Who made your kit car?" A: "Abingdon panel Bashers...back in the 50's!" Other "scuttle" hints: I have a small rubber "Gumby" that straddles the mirror on my cowl...he has several "caption balloons" I interchange depending on the mood, including: I'm the real deal, damnit, made in Abingdon UK Oct. 1954! If it ain't steel...it ain't real, damnit! I like my boats made of wood & my cars made of metal, damnit! "Kit" was a Trans-Am, damnit ...do I look like a Pontiac to you? Nobody "kitted" my ar*e, damnit..I was "bashed by hand" this way in 1954! Several others ...I add to the collection each year and keep them in the glove box. Always end up with a few old Saturday Night Live fans laughing... and a few people that remember seeing "Gumby" driving his old yellow MG! "Pokey" was up there with him for a while but with no "arms" to hold on to the mirror...we lost him on a sharp curve one day. Cheers, David 55 TF 1500 #7427 |

We were at "Club Day" at a local AACA Show. About 12 T cars in a row with our Club banner and next to the MGB's with their banner. We saw a "TD" enter the field and park at the far end. The owner cam down and asked us if he could park his newly bought "TD" with the Clubs cars. He bragged that he had gotten a real deal on his new "TD" for $18,000 (At the time a prime TD was about $12k). He then coommented twith amazement that our engines were in the front. (bonnets open for show) He thought he had bought a real TD instead of a VW. We politely pointed out the VW Club as where he should be. SAD!! |

I had a couple walk by my TD at a show many years ago and "Joe Suave" told his wife, I really don't like these MG's. They look too much like the kit cars." My wife had all she could do to keep me from flattening him. George Herschell |

I have a similar story. My wife was having a jumble sale and a couple asked her if they could look at my old car in the back of the garage, to which she agreed. She heard the husband say, “oh, it’s a kit, see the wooden floors”. When my wife told me about this, I started asking her what they looked like, because I wanted to find them (some how) and set them straight! |
