MG TD TF 1500 - K&N Filters for TF
The front air filter housing on the TF has a little nib (1/4" high)inside (from the crankcase ventilation hose connection coming from the valve cover) which prevents the proper seating of a K&N air filter on the lower plate. Something has to be altered, but what is the best solution? thanks, Tyler |

I just fitted repro Vokes air cleaners to my TF, so I believe I understand what you mean. The crankcase ventilation must end inside the K&N filter, and you will probably have to move the "nib" a bit more centrally on the cleaner backplate. I would be very interested in the parts no for the K&N cartridges you have found, if they are a good fit in the Vokes cleaners. The repo filter material that came with my filtes from Moss looks like a combo asbestos/wire mesh thing, and I wonder how effective it is. regards, Jan |

I'd like to convert to K & N also. So lets do some collective re-engineering here. Who has got photo's.? It's too damn cold here now (-10 this AM) for me to get any. What is the P/N of the K&N that comes close to being usable? Do they give dimensions on their website? I hate to think of modifing a real Vokes TF filter. They are kinda pricey and hard to find. Hi All, I too am interested in a solution, as I have previously questioned on this BBS the problem of providing a satisfactory filtering of air intake when non standard cylinder heads are fitted. My 51 TD has an original Leystall Lucas Aluminium cylinder head fitted which is about 1/2" wider at the manifold end. Because of this the standard intake manifold cannot be fitted without touching the bonnet side, and I have been running the car in this condition for some years. I must get around to finding a solution to this and I would welcome some suggestions.# Cheers, David |

David.. There are bonnet sides with a lumps similar to the one for the generator clearance. They were on MG-TD MK 11 to clear the s;lightly larger intake manifold, Sandy |

The K&N air filter is E-3180. It is 1.8" tall and 6" in diameter. The element is 0.65" thick. It fits nicely into the Volkes filter holder, but one would need to reposition the "nib" that sticks up ~1/4" right where the filter rests, but I don't want to mess up the original filter holder. I also don't think a nice job can be done of cutting a hole in the K&N. I'll probably end up running a 5/8" heater hose from the valve cover down to the bottom of the engine, like I do for the A.The return oil vapor from the valve cover tends to mess up the front air filter anyway. David Tinker, I also have a Lucus Laystall head for my 51 TD. I found that by removing the spacer between the carb flange and the intake manifold flange, I could use the Stellings & Hellings style air filters. They are not a good filter and seem to choke the air supply but can be fitted within the bonnet side. I have chosen to use a Vokes air filter which is 2" deep and requires the removal of the bonnet sides. The carbs breath much better and the performance is quite noticeably improved. The cars in warmer climates might have a problem moving the carbs closer to the exhaust manifold but I have not experienced any difficulty. George |

To C.T. Irwin -- I tried to use the P/N you listed for the K & N filter but I didn't get a positive response. The answer came back "No such Number" or something similar. Can you explain what category that number is in? Is the diameter 6.000 or a little more or less? Is the height 1.800 or a little more or less? They didn't seem to ask about the element thickness, which you listed as 0.065". How about a bit more information, I am sure there are a bunch of us that would really like to change over to K & N filters for TF's if we could find a workable solution. Sincerely, Bob |

Bob, I'm looking at the box right now, and see E-3180 on the box. Those measurements are very close. The filter fits just inside the rim of the filter housing with about 1/8" showing around the outside of the filter. Both halves of the housing bolt together nicely. I bought these on the K&N web site using the dimensions table. Tyler |
C.T. Irwin |
C.T. Funny I tried the dimension catagory and They said they didn't have any that size??? Bob |
Bob Jeffers |
Bob, Got this off of (google)K&NStore: Part E-3180 Product Specifications Product Style: Round Air Filter Height: 1.75 in (44 mm) Inner Wire: No Inside Diameter: 4.5 in (114 mm) Outside Diameter: 5.875 in (149 mm) Top Style: Open It could be a discontinued model, but several available on Amazon (look at google). There's probably no good way to address the "nib" problem, so will probably go with my method, as posted above. Tyler |

NAPA could not cross K&N E-3180 and KNFilters.com could not locate it but googling it turns it up at $29.95...very strange...is this what you paid? |

They were priced around $25 or so about 3 years ago when I bought them. tyler |

I found them on the K&N website. But I doubt if 44 mms height will fit within the Vokes cleaners - and the TF sidepanel? Will check in the garage tonight. BTW, restarted my TF last night after installation of the repo Vokes filters and new SU fuel pump. Vera fired up immediately, and there are no longer drops of fresh fuel finding their way to her exhaust pipe. Within 6-8 weeks I reckon that the frost is gone and roads are drying up. That'll be the day! Windshield down, sixpence on and vroooom..... Jan |

Just for fun, I'd like to suggest an alternative. I went with trumpets and bespoke mesh air filters that fit on the trumpets. This gave me free flowing intake with clearance between the intakes and the bonnet sides. See the picture for full explanation Alex |
ABW Waugh |
Alex - That is a horrible and painful solution. IF the edges of your trumpets are shaped properly, they might gain you 5%, BUT: The wire mesh destroys flow by probably 10%+, and it dos not filter anything but small birds. Engine wear is caused by particles that won't even hesitate as they go through to eat your engine. In race use, such devices have been known to totally wear out rings and bores and valve seats in one day's events, or even 10-20 miles in very dusty conditions. Then the debris finds its way into your oil and eats everything else. In street use, a few thousand miles will cause wear in excess of what you would get in 100,000 with a good air filter setup. FRM |
FR Millmore |
FRM, The wire mesh is specially built not to reduce the air flow. Also, there are three layers of mesh in the system and it will filter even the smallest of "birds" from entering the engine. It is acutally tighter than the previous filter set up I had in the Vokes filters. Alex |

Why go through all of this mixing and matching when Moss sells the Volks elements for $22.00 ea. Just asking. PJ |
P Jennings |
I bought the K&N 3180 filter through Amazon.com for $30...after a trial fit on my TF, I've decided to stay with the original Vokes so this filter is available to any one for $30, I'll pay the postage to any USA location.....Terry |

Terry -- I'll take them (you do have a pair don't you?) send me your info and I'll pay by Paypal. Or you can send me an email off line with your address and I'll send you a check. Cheers, Bob |
