MG TD TF 1500 - Large tripod Headlamps

Have come across a pair of 7 3/4 inch tripod headlamps anyone have an idea what they fit.

Hi George,

I think some Triumph cars had Lucas Tripod Headlamps. They had curved front glasses similar to the standard lamps. Jaguar and other upmarket cars also had tripods but they had flat fronts. My TF came with tripods that took standard prefocus bulbs. There was also a set of split rims to go with them. The lamps had badly corroded reflectors and I have junked them and replaced them with standard Lucas sealed beam units. I have retained the split rims since they do look good. There are tripods for sale in the UK at the moment for about £50 a pair. They take modern halogen bulbs but unfortunately have a pilot hole for a side lamp bulb. If I see a pair without the holes I will buy them since they do look good on a TF - especially with the split rims.

Hi Jan

I think maybe these might come without side light.

George, these sound like Lucas PF770 lights. They were found on early post war cars like Jaguar Xk120, MK5 and MK7. Bentley also used them and they had a "B" at the center of the tripod. The lenses were flat and the reflectors had a scalloped look. They look VERY nice on a TC!

Thanks for your replies , yes these do have flat lens and the reflectors as you described Hugh. Pity they don't fit a TF

I have them on my Triymph Renown... I love them - very bright and look great.

Look for the model of the buckets and you may figure out where they came from. I have tripod reflectors and glass in my TC buckets. Incidentally, the 8" TC bucket is actually around 7 3/4".
